| Remove/install | ||
1 | Remove front wheel | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
2 | Remove front bumper | Only on model 169
3.1 | Detach lower engine compartment paneling | Engine 266 with code (484) Rough road package
When removing right transverse control arm (2) with engine 266 without code (484) Rough road package
3.2 | Remove bottom section of soundproofing | Engine 640
4 | Remove fender liner rear section in front fender | Model 169
Model 245 | |||
5 | Place rag (10) between transverse control arm (2) and front axle carrier (1) | This will prevent damage to corrosion protection layer on front axle carrier (1) and transverse control arm (2).
6 | Remove bolts (3, 4) from transverse control arm (2) | Installation: Only secure transverse control arm (2) to front axle carrier (1) when at design level, otherwise transverse control arm bearings could be damaged.
Installation: To tighten bolts (3, 4), wheels must be fitted and vehicle must be lowered until design level is reached.
| |||
7 | Remove bracket (5) from front axle carrier (1) | Install new self-locking nuts in bracket (5). The holder (5) is an assembly aid for the nuts and has no securing function. If the holder is damaged the nuts can be assembled without the holder.
8 | Unscrew nut (6) from flange joint (7) | Replace self-locking nut (6).
If pin (8) of flange joint (7) turns when nut (6) is slackened or tightened, counterhold pin (8).
| |||
9 | Press flange joint (7) off steering knuckle (9)
| |||
10 | Push transverse control arm (2) downward and remove flange joint (7) from steering knuckle (9) | If corrosion protection layer was damaged when transverse control arm (2) was pressed down, damage must be repaired with preservation wax (spray can).
| Clean | ||
11 | Clean conical joint | There must be no oil or grease on the cone and on the thread.
Oil or grease on the conical joint means that the cone is drawn in too far and the rubber boot is damaged in the case of rotary motions.
12 | Remove transverse control arm (2) from front axle carrier (1) | Check flange joint (7) and rubber mount on transverse control arm (2); install new flange joint (7) and transverse control arm (2) if necessary.
13 | Install in the reverse order
14 | Perform wheel alignment check |
