When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected

 Installation

Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.

Deflate front suspension strut (40) using STAR DIAGNOSIS

Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489

Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory

Remove left front rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front rpm sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckle (5) and tie up to one side

 To do this, unscrew bolt (2) and unclip electrical feed line from retaining clamp on steering knuckle (5).

 Installation: Observe correct observe installation position, the chafe protection (3) must be screwed to the rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) as shown. It must not be installed between the rpm sensor (L6/1, L6/2) and steering knuckle (5).



Detach suspension strut (40) from spring control arm (17)



Remove link rod (78k) from stabilizer bar pivot bushing (10b)



Detach spring control arm (17) from front-axle carrier (1)

 The bolt (17a) must not turn. Make sure to counterhold bolt (17a) when slackening the nut. Otherwise the locating tabs for camber adjustment in the rubber mount (17d) will be sheared off if the repair kit is installed.



Check rubber mount (17d) in spring control arm (17) for signs of damage

If necessary, replace rubber mount (17d).

Check rubber bushing (40a) in spring control arm (17) for signs of damage

Replace rubber bushing (40a) if necessary:

Check stabilizer bar pivot bushing (10b) in spring control arm (17) for signs of damage

If necessary, replace torsion bar pivot bushing (10b).

Check supporting joint (7) in steering knuckle (5) for signs of damage

 Do not remove steering knuckle (5), if necessary: 

Replace supporting joint (7).
