Clean front axle

Remove front wheels

Detach all lines from axle tubes (5)

Place front axle on stand



Disassemble

Remove steering knuckle

Remove sealing rings and needle roller bearings from axle tubes (5)

Remove axle struts (3)

Mark installation position of torque tube (4) on front axle housing

Remove bolts (1) from torque tube (4)

Remove axle shaft and torque tube (4)

Remove bolts (2) on both axle tubes (5)

13

Remove pinion flange (6) with O-ring and shims



Check

Check drive pinion and mounting in pinion flange (6) for signs of wear and damage

If there are problems:



Repair pinion flange (6).

Remove one axle tube (5)

Remove crown wheel and differential (8)



Check

Check ring gear with differential (8) for signs of wear and damage

If there are problems:



Repair ring gear with differential (8).

Remove release spring (9), sliding sleeve (10), needle roller bearing or thrust plate and piston (11) from axle tube (5)

 Depending on the repair process a needle roller bearing or a thrust plate can be fitted.

Remove outer races (13) from both axle tubes (5)

Clean

Clean all parts



Check

Check all parts for wear and damage

If there are problems:



Replace worn or damaged parts.



Assemble

Adjust axle drive

Replace both O-rings (12) in axle tube (5)

Install piston (11), needle roller bearing, sliding sleeve (10) and release spring (9) into axle tube (5)

 The rollers on the needle roller bearing must point towards the sliding sleeve (10).

 Front axle 737.220
If a thrust plate was installed, the thrust plate must be replaced by a needle roller bearing and installed with a new sliding sleeve (10).

Grease tapered roller bearing on ring gear with differential (8)

Long-life grease

Install ring gear with differential (8)

Replace O-ring between pinion flange (6) and axle tube (5)

Coat drive pinion on pinion flange (6) with running-in paste

Molybdenum disulfide running-in paste

Insert pinion flange (6) with shims and O-ring into axle tube (5) and fix in place on the axle tube (5) with a bolt

 The notch (7) on the pinion flange (6) must point upwards in the installation position of the front axle.

Coat both axle tubes (5) with sealant

Sealant, bracket to special drive cap

Put both axle tubes (5) together and tighten screws/bolts (2) uniformly

 Bolt, axle tube to axle tube

Replace O-ring between pinion flange (6) and torque tube (4)

Coat sealing surface between pinion flange (6) and torque tube (4) with sealant

Sealant, bracket to special drive cap

Attach drive shaft and torque tube (4) to the differential housing

 Observe the marked installation position.
Tighten bolts (1) in a diagonal pattern.

Install axle struts (3)

Install sealing rings and needle roller bearing in axle tubes (5)
