Modification notes
| Checking | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid. | Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses.
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the running engine | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
| Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the transmission. Before opening the hydraulic system, thoroughly clean the area surrounding the separation point. Only lint-free cleaning cloths may be used. Even the smallest dirt particles in the hydraulic components can negatively effect the function of the transmission and lead to a breakdown. When performing repairs, always wear gloves lined with rubber that are oil resistant and non fibrous. The transmission components are to be stored in a clean environment. To this end it is advisable to cover up the components or to store them in a clean plastic case with a cover | ||
| General information | Observe different transmission oil temperatures when checking transmission oil level. | |
1 | Stand vehicle on a level surface
2 | Move selector lever to position "P"
3 | Open engine hood | ||
4 | Unlock cap (93) | Break off plate (93a) using a suitable tool and press out locking pin (93b) remaining in cap (93) downwards.
5 | Detach cap (93) from oil filler pipe (2)
6.1 | Fill with transmission oil | For transmission oil change, repair work and transmission exchange
Filling the transmission oil should ensure that there is a sufficient quantity of transmission oil in the transmission, otherwise transmission damage will occur.
| |||
7 | Start engine | ||
8 | Increase engine speed briefly (approx. 3 seconds) to 2000 rpm
9 | Shift through the driving stages several times with the vehicle stationary and the engine idling | Operate service brake otherwise vehicle will begin moving.
10 | Allow engine to idle in selector lever position "P" | Maintain minimum running time of 2 minutes. A lower minimum running time causes an inaccurate measurement.
11 | Call up the transmission fluid temperature using STAR DIAGNOSIS | STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system
12 | Check final filling of transmission with dipstick at specified transmission oil temperature and engine speed | The transmission oil temperature and engine rpm must be maintained. Deviations cause inaccurate measurement.
Transmission oil level must not be checked when vehicle is running in limp-home mode.
The final filling can be inspected both at 50 °C (scale value: 2 to 4) and 80 °C (scale value: 5 to 7), whereby each scale value (see brackets) must be noted.
Wipe off dipstick using lint free cloth. Chamois leathers are the most suitable.
Push the dipstick all the way into the oil filler pipe (2), pull out and read off the lowest scale value on the front and back of the dipstick.
Transmission oil level, final fill
Measuring rod | |||
13 | Check the final fill of the transmission again with dipstick at specified transmission oil temperature and engine speed and correct if necessary | It is essential to suction off excess transmission oil with the hand pump. Insufficient and excessive quantities of oil result in malfunctions and transmission damage.

If necessary: | |||
Add oil to transmission.
| |||
Carry out work steps 10 to 12 once again when refilling or suctioning off transmission oil.
14.1 | Perform additional filling | After working on transmission oil cooling system
An additional 0.125 l oil must be used for refilling.
15 | Disconnect STAR DIAGNOSIS.
16 | Connect cap (93) to oil filler pipe (2)
17 | Secure cap (93) with new locking pin (93b) | Ensure that the locking pin (93b) latches in the cap (93).
18 | Check transmission for leaks and function |
