| Remove/install | ||
1 | Disconnect ground line from battery
2 | Open engine hood and raise to vertical position
Installation: Only close the engine hood after the leak test.
3 | Remove air filter (4) | ||
Warning | Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
4 | Drain off coolant | ||
Topical note | Notes on coolant
5 | Remove air intake hose (3) from alternator (G2) | Only on vehicles with code Z90 (vehicle, capable of fording up to 1,195 mm) or with code Z69 (vehicle, capable of fording up to 1,500 mm).
Installation: Do not install the air intake hose (3) until the engine oil circuit has been filled.
6 | Remove crankcase breather line (2) from air intake hose (1) | Installation: Do not attach the crankcase breather line (2) until the engine oil circuit has been filled.
7 | Remove air intake hose (1) from the exhaust gas turbocharger (5) | Installation: Do not install the air intake hose (1) until the engine oil circuit has been filled.
8 | Expose electrical lines (11)
9 | Remove coolant hose (13) from connection piece (10) | Collect coolant which flows out.
10 | Detach crankcase ventilation hose (8) from oil separator (9)
11 | Unscrew connection fitting (12) from connection piece (10) | Installation: Replace sealing ring.
12 | Detach bracket of the crankcase breather line (2) from the connection piece (10) | Bolt, connection piece for coolant pump to cylinder head
13 | Unscrew oil filter cover (14) from the oil filter housing (15) and remove it | Pulling out the oil filter cover (14) causes the engine oil to run out of the oil filter housing (15) and back into the oil pan.
Installation: Replace sealing ring.
Oil filter cover to oil filter housing
14 | Disconnect cable tie and remove oil pressure line (6). | Install new sealing rings.
Union nut, oil pressure line to turbocharger
Banjo bolt, oil pressure line to oil filter housing
15 | Disconnect electrical connector (16) from the engine oil temperature sensor (B11)
16 | Disconnect electrical connector (16) from oil pressure sensor (B12).
17 | Remove oil-water heat exchanger (7) | Catch escaping coolant and engine oil.
Installation: Insert screw (arrow) into the bore before attaching the oil-water heat exchangers (7).
Bolt, oil/water heat exchanger to cylinder crankcase
18 | Remove housing cover (19) from the heat exchanger (20) | Installation: Do not tighten screws (17) until the oil-water heat exchanger (7) has been installed.
Bolt, housing cover to oil/water heat exchanger
19 | Remove seal (18) | Installation: Install new seal (18).
20 | Remove engine oil temperature sensor (B11) from housing cover (19) | Only if the oil-water heat exchanger (7) or the housing cover (19) is being replaced.
Engine oil temperature sensor to oil/water heat exchanger
21 | Remove screw plug from housing cover (19) | Only if the oil-water heat exchanger (7) or the housing cover (19) is being replaced.
Screw plug for oil/water heat exchanger
22 | Install in the reverse order
23 | Fill engine oil circuit
24 | Check engine oil level with oil dipstick or on display, add oil if necessary
Notes on engine oil | |||
Observe engine oil grade set in maintenance system or Specifications for Operating Fluids.
Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
25 | Start engine and allow to run in idle for 10 s until the oil pressure has built up, then run the engine at varying speeds and bleed the cooling system. | Top up coolant to the bottom edge of the filler neck on the expansion reservoir.
26 | Shut off engine and check the area of the oil-water heat exchanger (7) for leakproofness | Visual inspection. |
