1 Spin the rotor shaft (1) checking its spinning smoothness and uniformity. Spin to both sides until free of oil carbon sediment.
Control of axial clearance
2 Rest the support (3) with the dial gauge (4) on the flat face of the turbocharger's housing and the feeler on the shaft's end (1). Set the dial gauge (4) scale to zero with the pre-load applied.
3 From the opposite side, move the shaft by the turbine nut (2) both ways (indicated by the arrow) and read the axial clearance on the dial gauge (4). Take note of the axial clearance.
Should the axial clearance be excessive, replace the turbocharger.

Control of radial clearance
Measure the radial clearance with the help of a feeler gauge.
4 Force the rotor to the side indicated by the arrow (a) and measure the distance between the housing and the turbine (1).
Take note of the distance.
5 Force the rotor in the opposite way and measure again in the same place.
Take note of the distance.
The difference between the two values will be the radial clearance.
Should the radial clearance be excessive, replace the turbocharger.
