Detach charge air cooler and place with attached coolant lines to one side

Remove poly-V belt

Remove vacuum pump (13)

Only for removal of the camshaft sprocket with centrifuge (8)

Disconnect engine wiring harness (2) to the respective components on cylinder head covers

 Ensure correct routing of the engine wiring harness (2).

Detach engine wiring harness (2) together with guide from cylinder head covers and place engine wiring harness (2) to the front to one side

Remove cylinder head covers

Attach hold-down tool (9) on center bearing points on cylinder head

 The hold-down tool (9) assumes function of camshaft bearings and relieves the load on camshaft brackets (10).

Set piston on the cylinder 1 to ignition top dead center (OT)

Check timing

Put the timing chain (1) in place again if markings (11) for ignition TDC on piston 1 are displaced.
Engine damage can occur otherwise due to wrong timing.

Loosen screw/bolts (12) for camshaft sprocket (7)

 in order not to change the basic position of camshafts, the engine must not be turned during removal of screw/bolts (12).

Remove chain tensioner

Mark position of timing chain (1) relative to camshaft sprocket (7, 8) to be removed

 Use touch-up paint pen.

Fix timing chain (1) in place using cable tie

 In order to prevent the timing chain (1) falling into the timing chain chamber.

Remove screw/bolts (12) and remove camshaft sprocket (7) from left exhaust camshaft (3) and timing chain (1)

 Ensure that the screw/bolts (12) do not fall into the timing chain chamber.

Remove hold-down tool (9) on right cylinder head

Remove camshaft holder (10) and right intake camshaft (6) at right cylinder head

 Camshaft retainer bracket on cylinder head

Fix timing chain (1) in place using a cable tie

 In order to prevent the timing chain (1) falling into the timing chain chamber.

Remove right intake camshaft (6) and camshaft sprocket with centrifuge (8) from the timing chain (1) on right cylinder head

 Raise intake camshaft at the rear right (6).

Detach camshaft sprocket with centrifuge (8) from right intake camshaft (6)

 In a removed condition.

Install in the reverse order

 Timing chain, chain tensioner
