TV mode, general

The tuner unit makes it possible to receive digital TV channels in the vehicle and show them on the audio/COMAND display. If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated via the "ON" button (except code U78 (AMG sport exhaust system)) in the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or in the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission). On vehicles with code U78 (AMG Sport exhaust system), the head unit can be switched on and off by pressing the volume control button (automatic transmission) of the right lower control panel or the volume control button (manual transmission) of the left lower control panel. The signal is forwarded to the head unit by the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) or by the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) via the lower control panel LIN, the Audio/COMAND control panel and the telematics CAN.

The TV functions can be selected, activated and set with the controls of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded as follows:

Steering wheel electronics

Steering LIN

Steering column tube module control unit

Chassis FlexRay

Electronic ignition lock control unit

User interface CAN

Instrument cluster

User interface CAN

Head unit

The TV functions can be selected, activated and set with the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel. The "Back" button supports navigation in the menus. The control signal are transmitted to the head unit by the Audio/COMAND control panel via telematics CAN.

The TV functions can be operated with the touchpad (as of 01.06.2015 with code 448 (Touchpad) or with code 498 (Japan version)). The control signals are transmitted to the head unit by the touchpad via telematics CAN.

The TV functions can be activated on the upper control panel control unit. The volume can be changed on the left lower control panel (with manual transmission) using the volume control button or on the right lower control panel (with automatic transmission) using the volume control button. The control signals are forwarded as follows:

LCP LIN

Audio/COMAND control panel

Telematics CAN

Head unit

The tuner unit separates the video and audio signals that are contained in the TV signals. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:

Receipt of TV signals

Output of video signals

Audio signal output

Additional information (with CODE 498 (Japan version))

Additional information (except CODE 498 (Japan version) and except CODE 494 (USA version))

Receipt of TV signals

The TV-1 signals are received via the following route:

Rear window antenna (except model 205.4) or windshield antenna (model 205.4)

TV 1 and DAB band III antenna amplifier (model 205.0/3, 253.3) or FM 2, DAB and TV 1 antenna amplifier (model 205.2/4, 253.9)

Tuner unit

Model 205
up to model year 2019
with code 537 (DAB digital radio standard (Digital Audio Broadcast))
with code 865 (digital TV)
Model 253 (except 253.99)
up to model year 2020
with code 537 (DAB digital radio standard (Digital Audio Broadcast))
with code 865 (digital TV)
The tuner unit receives digital radio (DAB) Band-III signals over the same input as the TV-1 signals. The tuner unit separates the signals internally with an integrated antenna splitter.

In model 205.0/3, 253.3 the TV-2 signal is received via the following route:

Windshield antenna (model 205.0) or rear window antenna (model 205.3, 253)

TV 2 antenna amplifier

Tuner unit

In model 205.2/4, 253.9 the TV-2 signal is received via the following route:

Windshield antenna

TV 2 and DAB band III antenna amplifier

TV and DAB antenna splitter (with code 537 (Digital radio (DAB)))

Tuner unit

The TV-3 signal is received over the following path:

Windshield antenna

TV 3 antenna amplifier

Tuner unit

The tuner unit processes the TV signals and separates the video signals from the audio signals.

Output of video signals

The video signals are transferred via LVDS lines as follows:

Tuner unit

Head unit

Audio/COMAND display

Audio signal output

In vehicles except code 810 (Sound system), the tuner unit transfers the audio signals via the MOST to the head unit. The head unit amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

On vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system), the tuner unit forwards the audio signals via the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.

Additional information (with CODE 498 (Japan version))

The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:

TV reception

Additional functions

TV reception

The reception of encoded programs is possible with a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card. With digital TV reception the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.

Additional functions

The tuner unit has the following functions:

Digital image storage

Last settings

"BML" (Broadcast Markup Language) function: The tuner unit supports video text for all available Japanese TV stations. This enables information to be shown similar to a small website on weather, news, etc. By selecting a region in the setting list you can obtain region-specific information.

– Electronic Program Guide function: The Electronic Program Guide shows information such as start and end of broadcasts and detailed information on the television programs for each TV station.

Bilingual function: Two languages are supported depending on station availability, e. g. Japanese on the main-sound track and English on the sub-sound track.
