General
Compared with conventional light distribution, highway mode illuminates the roadway more brightly and extensively. This means that objects at a great distance are detected earlier.
Highway mode light distribution |
P82.10-7804-11
Highway mode is activated when the system detects that the vehicle is on a highway by using the vehicle speed or the navigation system. A raised headlamp range adjustment ensures that the driver sees further than they would with conventional low beam. With active automatic high beam, light distribution is optimized for highway driving by, for example, specifically reducing the risk of blinding oncoming trucks. The highway partial high beam is activated when the system detects vehicles driving in front. These cars are excluded from the illumination.
Function requirements
Low beams ON
Exterior lights switch in "Auto" position
Variable light distribution enabled
Enhanced fog light function deactivated
Radius of curve 800 m
Motorway light
The freeway lights are activated at speeds typical for the freeway or expressway. The light distribution also takes into account the navigation system's map data. Light distribution is changed by vertically deflecting the light cone and, depending on the version of the LED headlamps, by increasing the light output. If preceding or oncoming road users might be blinded, light distribution activates the highway mode partial high beam. Here, areas of the light cones that could blind other road users are omitted.
Highway mode is generated depending on the following control variables:
Steering angle
Vehicle speed
Vehicle yaw behavior (vehicle movement)
Current traffic situation (e.g. preceding or oncoming vehicle)
Depending on the version of the LED headlamps, the light output of the low beam can be increased:
From a vehicle speed of 90 km/h
With a curve radius of over 800 m
With a driving distance of more than 2.5 km
The light cone of the right front lamp unit is also raised:
From a vehicle speed of 110 km/h
With a curve radius of over 800 m
With a driving distance of more than 1 km
The maximum lift is reached at 130 km/h. If the vehicle speed drops to below 80 km/h, highway mode is deactivated.
If the automatic high beam is switched on, the light distribution of the left high beam is changed so that the light cone appears to be cut off at the height of the center guardrail.
When it is raining, highway mode is deactivated. Depending on the version of the LED headlamps, light distribution can be modified so that reflections from the wet roadway are prevented as much as possible.
