Cornering illumination
General
Cornering lights improve the illumination of the road in darkness, particularly when turning and on tight bends.
When turning, the cornering light is switched-on on the inside of the bend. Because pedestrians or obstacles can be detected earlier, the cornering light ensures significantly greater safety when turning, e.g. onto poorly illuminated roads.

Cornering illumination
The triggering condition for switching on the cornering light is the intention of the driver to turn which is defined by the position of the combination switch (turn signaling) or the steering wheel angle (steering movement).
The vehicle speed influences the actuation characteristics of the cornering light. At slow speed, a lower switch-on threshold is required to ensure that the cornering light is activated at an early stage in urban traffic.
Actuation of the cornering light is activated in the following situations:
At a vehicle speed of less than 70 km/h from a certain steering movement
At a vehicle speed of less than 40 km/h and active turn signaling
Below a vehicle speed of 40 km/h, triggering of cornering light actuation by turn signaling has a higher priority than triggering by steering movement detection. This means that when the steering wheel is turned and the turning direction is in the opposite direction, illumination of the inner curve of the outer edge of the roadway is guaranteed (on traffic circles). If the reverse gear is engaged, only the steering movement is evaluated.
If both triggering conditions are fulfilled simultaneously, then the actuation characteristics of the cornering light are changed. The cornering light is only actuated from a certain steering movement.
During forward travel, the relevant cornering light on the inside of the curve is actuated. Whilst reversing, both cornering lights are actuated. The cornering lights are switched on and off with dimming.
The cornering light remains switched on for approx. 2 s and is switched off with dimming within 2 s.
Cornering light with intersection or traffic circle function
When approaching intersections or roundabouts, both cornering lights are also switched on. The corresponding geographical information is provided by the navigation system. The roadway is already extensively illuminated toward both sides 40 meters before an intersection and/or 70 meters before a roundabout.
