Function requirements, general
To enable the function, the on-board electrical system management system control unit checks the following function requirements:
Function switched on via ECO start/stop function button
Driver door closed
Seat belt lock closed
Engine hood closed
One-off exceedance of a vehicle speed of 20 km/h
Drive range "4L" not engaged (all-wheel drive)
Defrost button not actuated.
Rear window heater (R1) switched off
System diagnosis completed without faults
On-board electrical system battery (G1) sufficiently charged
On-board electrical system battery temperature 5 °C
Coolant temperature between 19 and 105 °C
Fuel temperature 90 °C
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration not active
Exhaust gas temperature < 670 °C
Engine Start/stop function, general points
For a stationary vehicle, the engine start/stop function automatically shuts off the engine and starts it again once the driver wants to drive off.
It is still possible to stop and start the engine in the conventional way.
Engine shutoff via engine start/stop function
Where the function requirements are fulfilled, the on-board electrical system management system control unit enables the engine start/stop function.
The engine is switched off and the indicator lamp in the ECO start/stop function button is switched on under the following conditions:
Vehicle speed 2 km/h
Steering manoeuvre within a rotation angle of 450 or < 100/s
Idling speed
Sufficient vacuum in brake booster
Transmission in neutral position (for manual transmission)
Clutch pedal not actuated (for manual transmission).
Drive range "D" engaged and service brake actuated (for automatic transmission)
To reduce the time for the engine restart, the CDI control unit detects the piston position during engine stop via the crankshaft Hall sensor.
Start engine via engine start/stop function
The engine is started and the indicator lamp in the ECO start/stop function button is switched off under the following conditions:
Clutch pedal actuated (for manual transmission).
Service brake no longer actuated (for automatic transmission).
The CDI control unit then starts the engine.
The engine is also independently (without driver action) force started if one of the indicated function requirements is no longer given.
Voltage stabilization
The on-board electrical system management system control unit transfers a corresponding signal to the DC/DC converter during engine start. This temporarily increases the on-board electrical system voltage to compensate for the voltage drop during engine start.
The brightness of the headlamps can change due to the voltage drop during engine start. They are not connected to the DC/DC converter.
Engine restart bypass relay control
The on-board electrical system management system control unit actuates the idle start-stop relay 1 and activates the idle start-stop relay 2. Once the restart conditions are fulfilled, the on-board electrical system management system control unit switches on the idle start-stop relay 1 for approx. 0.19 s during engine restart and briefly opens the idle start-stop relay 2. The voltage is thus directly transmitted to the starter. In this way, the on-board electrical system management system control unit facilitates a voltage stabilization of the battery.
