AS60.00-Z-0001-01A | Risk of explosion caused by sanding/grinding dust. Risk of injury caused by irritation of respiratory paths when inhaled or from eye and skin contact with carbon fibers. | Suction off dust as it is produced with approved vacuum cleaner. Wear respiratory protection, safety glasses and protective gloves | Danger |
Potential risks
Risk of explosion
Enriched sanding/grinding dust can lead to dust explosion in the presence of ignition sources. Sanding/grinding dust can be electrostatically charged when evacuated with an air extraction system and pose an ignition hazard.
Risk of injury
When performing certain types of work on carbon fiber reinforced plastics, such as cutting, grinding, etc., carbon fiber dust containing fine, short fibers is produced. This dust or these fibers irritate the bronchial tubes and possibly the lungs. Fibers that settle in the lungs may lead to lung damage.
Skin irritation
The pointed tips of the carbon fiber dust fibers cause minute injuries when they penetrate the surface of the skin; this can lead to skin irritations, particularly in combination with dirt.
Safety precautions/instructions
Dust-free machining and cleaning, i.e.:
Do not blow CRP dust off with compressed air or sweep it when dry.
Suction off CRP dust at the place of origin (e.g. by means of a suction mechanism integrated in the tool or a guided industrial vacuum cleaner).
Keep the workplace clean and clean it regularly.
Avoid stirring up CRP dust.
Ensure good ventilation in the workplace.
Wear work clothes with long sleeves.
Avoid contact between CRP dust and the skin.
Apply skin protection cream and skin care product before and after work.
The following personal protective equipment must be used:
Tightly sealed safety glasses.
Suitable respiratory protection.
Protective gloves appropriate to the machining process.
Type 5 breathable protective suit if necessary.
Machining should preferably be performed in separate facilities, e.g. sanding chambers.
If necessary, cordon off and mark the working area if large amounts of dust are generated.
Employment restrictions for adolescents and expectant mothers.
First-aid measures
Contact with eyes
Immediately rinse eyes thoroughly with running, lukewarm water and then contact an eye specialist.
Contact with skin
Immediately wash affected areas of skin with warm water and soap.
Respiratory paths
Go outside into the fresh air. Contact a medical specialist.
