Danger | Risk of fire/risk of explosion due to short circuit and escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of (burn) injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte/mist, short circuit and arcing. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte or absorption of lead through the skin or body orifices. Risk of death due to voltage U >= 30 V AC and U >= 60 V DC. | No fires, sparks, open flames, or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing, and glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
Topical note | Notes on battery
1 | Remove cover of engine compartment prefuse box (F32/3)
For longer test and diagnosis work, a battery charger with medium charging capacity must be connected to maintain the on-board electrical system voltage due to the high current requirement.
2 | Connect charger positive terminal (1) to charging terminal point (4) of engine compartment prefuse box (F32/3)
3 | Connect charger ground terminal (2) to ground terminal point (3) on wheel well and switch on charger | Use a charger with at least 30 A charging current and 13.5 V charging voltage, otherwise the on-board electrical system battery could be partially discharged.
4 | Switch off and disconnect charger | After completing the test and diagnosis work on the vehicle.
5 | Install cover of engine compartment prefuse box (F32/3) |
