Remove/install main fuel filter

Remove/install

Risk of explosion caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel and risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel

No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Only pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

Remove air intake hose downstream of air filter

Remove engine trim panel

Unclip vacuum line from cover on left cylinder head cover

 Push vacuum line to side.

Remove glow output stage and lay down to side

On engine 642.896/898

 Do not disconnect electrical connector from glow output state

Remove right EKAS end position switch connector (X156/2) from bracket (12)

With engine 642.898

Open clamps (2, 4)

 Installation: Replace clamps (2, 4)

Detach fuel hoses (3, 5) from fuel filter (1) and close off using suitable stop plugs

 Installation: Check fuel hoses (3, 5) for damage, replace if necessary.



Loosen screw/bolt (7)



Lift out fuel filter (1) until electrical connector (6) and drain pipe (8) can be unclipped

With code (KL5) Fuel filter whit water separator

Disconnect electrical connector (6) from fuel filter water level sensor (B76) or fuel filter heater with water level sensor (R53/1)

Pull out safety clamp (10) (arrow), unlock catch hooks using suitable pliers (9) and detach drain pipe (8)

 Installation: Check O-ring (11) and replace if necessary.

Remove fuel filter (1)

Remove fuel filter water level sensor (B76) or fuel filter heater with water level sensor (R53/1)

 Only when replacing the fuel filter (1).

Install in the reverse order

Switch on ignition

 Before initially starting engine, fill fuel filter (1) by switching ignition on and off several times to prevent damaging high pressure pump

 Danger!

Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Conduct engine test run and check leaktightness in the area of the fuel filter (1)
