Warning | Risk of injury. Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components.
Caution | Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from skin and eye contact with brake fluid | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
Warning | Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.

| Remove/install | ||
1 | Move brakepads (1) of rear axle into assembly position.
| |||
2 | Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).
3 | Remove cover above brake fluid expansion reservoir.
4 | Clean area around cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir. | Assembly cleaner
5 | Unscrew cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir and extract some brake fluid. | This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.
6 | Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.
7 | Unclip electric line (7) from holder (6).
8 | Remove bolts (2) . | Bolt, guide pin to brake caliper
9 | Remove brake caliper (3) from brake caliper support (4) and fasten brake caliper (3) to vehicle in unstressed condition to relieve brake hose (5) and electric line (7).
Do not disconnect electrical connector from left electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/1) or right electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/2).
Do not remove brake hose (5).
10 | Remove brakepads (1) from brake caliper support (4). | Installation: Only brakepads (1) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed, and only as complete sets.
Installation: No brake pastes or lubricants may be applied to the brakepads (1).
11 | Remove spring steel sheets (8) from brake caliper support (4). | If the spring steel sheets (8) are damaged.
| |||
Replace spring steel sheets (8) in sets.
Check | |||
12 | Check brakepad (1) for wear and condition.
| Model 247 | ||
| Model 177 | ||
| Model 118 | ||
If a problem is detected,
| |||
Replace brake linings (1) in sets.
13 | Check brake disks for wear and condition.
| |||
Only brake disks approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
If damage or too much wear is detected.
| |||
Replace brake disks in sets.
14 | Check brake caliper (3) with detachable parts for damage. | If damage is detected,
| |||
Replace corresponding components.
15 | Check brake caliper support (4) and sliding bolts for damage and ease of movement. | If a problem is detected,
| |||
Replace corresponding components.
| Clean | ||
16 | Clean contact surfaces of brakepads (1) on brake caliper (3) and on brake caliper support (4).
Remove adhesive residue on contact surfaces of brake caliper (3) completely.
Assembly cleaner | |||
17 | Press back brake piston using pusher tool (01). | If removed brake caliper (3) is reinstalled.
Resetting device | |||
If the brake piston is sluggish.
| |||
Replace brake caliper (3).
18 | Install in the reverse order.
Concluding tasks | |||
Danger | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. | Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
19 | Operate brake pedal several times until the brakepads (1) make contact with the brake disks. | Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
20 | Check fluid level in brake fluid expansion reservoir and correct if necessary.
| |||
Danger | Risk of death caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand | Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand.
21 | Perform brake test on test stand.
