Modification notes
17.3.11 | Perform brake test on dynamometer, added | Operation step 17 |
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear safety gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
| Notes on repairs to brake system | ||
| Brake fluid notes | ||
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Lower brake fluid level in brake fluid reservoir down to "MIN" mark | In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.
2 | Remove wheels | ||
Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary
3.1 | Disconnect left and right front brake pad contact sensor connectors (S10/1x1, S10/2x1) and pull contact sensors out of brake lining | Installation: Replace defective contact sensors.
| Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors | ||
3.2 | Disconnect right rear brake pad contact sensor (S10/4) and pull contact sensor out of brake lining | Installation: Replace defective contact sensors.
4 | Unclip electrical feed line of contact sensor from retaining clamp on longitudinal member
5 | Pry out clip (10) | ||
6 | Detach protective caps from bolts (31c) and remove bolts (31c) | Installation: Replace bolts (31c).
| |||
| |||
7 | Detach brake caliper (31) with brake pads (31g) and hang up to one side | Do not tension or kink brake hose. Attach brake caliper (31) to the vehicle free from tension to relieve the load on the brake hose, otherwise the brake hose will be damaged.
8 | Remove brake pads (31g) from brake caliper (31) | Brake pads (31g) are to be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
Only brake pad kits (31g) approved by Mercedes Benz must be installed.
Installation: Install brake pads (31g) without grease.
| Checking | ||
9 | Check brake pad thickness and brake disks | Replace brake pads (31g) and brake disks in complete sets if necessary.
Check brake lining thickness
Inspect condition of brake disks
10 | Check upper and lower bellows for damage and upper and lower guide pins for ease of movement | Replace defective parts.
11 | Check brake caliper (31) for leaks and dust boot for damage | If the brake caliper (31) is leaky or the dust boot is damaged:
Replace front axle brake caliper
Replace rear axle brake caliper
12 | Press back brake piston using resetting device (031). | If the brake piston is difficult to move:
Replace front axle brake caliper
Replace rear axle brake caliper
Check for creases forming in the dust boot:
If the dust boot projects out beyond the brake piston after the piston is pressed back, move the dust boot into the correct position.
Resetting device | |||
| Clean | ||
13 | Clean contact surfaces of brake pads (31g) at brake caliper (31) | Installation: Do not use any sharp-edged or pointed tools to prevent damage.
14 | Install in the reverse order
Danger! | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work | Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
15 | Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (31g) contact the brake disks | Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
16 | Check brake fluid level, correct if necessary
Brake system - inspect fluid level
17 | Carry out brake test on the test stand |
