Adjust the pre-load of the differential assembly bearings
1 Install the checking device (3) in the contact surface of the taper group housing.
Observe the correct seating of the device (3) on the surface of the taper group case. The thrust pieces (7) must be supported perfectly (arrows) on the flanks of the bearing (6) and the measuring bases (8) be supported on the bearing (9) .
2 Gradually tighten both threaded rings of the bearings (6, 9) of the taper roller bearings and, at the same time, observe the reaching of the specified pre-load on the dial gages.
Check the diameter engraved on the standard ring utilized to set the checking device to zero. Example: The engraving is 280.12 mm, thus the dial gage hand can only move 0.02 mm to the left or 0.03 mm to the right, as the standard measurement for the bearings pre-load is from 280.10 to 280.15 mm.
3 Turn the crown gear a few times for the accommodation of the taper roller bearings and return to the initial position. Observe if there was a pre-load drop. If necessary, correct actuating on the threaded rings.
If the value of the nominal pre-load is exceeded, loosen the threaded rings and repeat the operations starting from step 2.
4 Confirm the crown and pinion lash and, if necessary, correct and repeat the pre-load adjustment.
5 Tighten the bolts of the threaded rings lock plates to the specified tightening torque.
