Determine the thickness of the spacer washer without the pinion
Determining the thickness of the pinion spacer washer is possible only after completing the adjustment of the basic pinion depth against the crown.
Install the external races (2, 10) of the tapered roller bearings in the differential case (1) . Measure without the spacer washer (8) and the spacer bushing (9).
1 | Install taper roller bearings (3, 11). |
2 | Measure and record the "A" dimension between the outer faces of taper roller bearings (3, 11). |
The measurement requires a caliper holder (arrow). Use the support device together with the contact base (13). |
3 | Measure and record dimension "B" by adding the "C" and "D" dimensions. |
The “D” level is the spacer bushing height (9). The “C” level is the height of the tapered roller bearing (11). |
4 | To determine the dimension "E", subtract from the dimension "A" (step 2), the sum of dimension "B" (step 3) with dimension "F"Rear axle 742.825. 746.270/271/881/882/984/999/987/988/996/998 Rear axles 742.824 |
The dimension “F” is the height of the inner race of the tapered roller bearing (3). |
The spacer washer thickness (8) is determined by the level “E” amount less the amount indicated for the pre-load of the pinion's tapered roller bearings. |
The spacer washer is supplied with thickness from 1.60 mm with increments of 0.01 mm up to 2.50 mm. |

Determine the thickness of the spacer washer with the pinion
Only when the tapered roller bearing (11) is mounted on the pinion (12).
5 | Install the pinion (12) with the tapered roller bearing (11). |
6 | Install the retaining device on the differential case (1) and tighten the spindle (arrow) against the pinion (12). |

7 | Measure and record the depth (arrow A) between the differential case face (1) and the inner face of the tapered roller bearing (11). |
Use a depth Vernier caliper with enough dimension to support it on the differential housing face (1). If a depth Vernier caliper with proper dimensions is not available, use two parallel supports for the measurement. |
8 | Remove the pinion (12) together with the tapered roller bearing (11) and install the tapered roller bearing (3). |
9 | Measure and record the distance (arrow B) between the differential case (1) and the outer face of the tapered roller bearings (3). |
Use a depth Vernier caliper with enough dimension to support it on the differential housing face (1). If a depth Vernier caliper with proper dimensions is not available, use two parallel supports for the measurement. |
10 | Subtract from the measure found in step 7 the measure found in step 9. |
11 | To determine the dimension “E”, subtract from the value determined on the step 10, the sum of dimension “D” with dimension “F”Rear axle 742.825. 746.270/271/881/882/984/999/987/988/996/998 Rear axles 742.824 |
Dimension "D" is the height of the spacer sleeve (9). Dimension “F” is the height of the inner race of the tapered roller bearing (3). |
The spacer washer thickness (8) is determined by the level “E” amount less the amount indicated for the pre-load of the pinion's tapered roller bearings. |
The spacer washer is supplied with thickness from 1.60 mm with increments of 0.01 mm up to 2.50 mm. |
