Dial gage
1 | Clean bearing points on crankshaft with a chamois leather. |
2 |
Measure main bearing journal dia. (D) with the outside micrometer at two places (about a 90° displacement). |
Dimensions stated in the table must be maintained. If one of the measurements obtained is not within the tolerance, machine crankshaft. |

3 | Clean bearing points in crankcase and bearing cap with a chamois leather. |
4 |
Insert crankshaft bearing shell (2) in the denoted sequence into the crankcase. |
Locking lugs (arrow) for crankshaft bearing shells (2) must be located in the crankcase groove. Oil holes in the crankshaft bearing shells (2) and the crankcase must be aligned. |
5 |
Insert crankshaft bearing shells (1) in the denoted sequence into the main bearing caps (3, 4). |
Locking lugs (arrow) for the crankshaft bearing shell (1) must sit in the groove on the main bearing caps (3, 4). |

For engine 904.9
6.1 Attach main bearing cap (3, 4) to the crankcase and tighten respective main bearing screws (6) using the tightening torque.
All main bearing caps (3, 4) are inserted into the crankcase at the side, displaced from the middle and are marked with numbers (arrows). They must be installed in accordance with the numbers, in ascending order, beginning from the front of the crankcase, and must not be mixed up.

For engine 906.9
6.2 Attach main bearing cap (3, 4) to the crankcase and tighten respective main bearing screws (6) using the tightening torque.
All main bearing caps (3, 4) are inserted into the crankcase at the side, displaced from the middle and are marked with numbers (arrows). They must be installed in accordance with the numbers, in ascending order, beginning from the front of the crankcase, and must not be mixed up.

6 | Set dial indicator and quick calipers and outside micrometer to the nominal dimension of the main bearing journal (preload 5 mm). |
7 |
Use dial indicator and quick calipers to measure crankshaft bearing bores in crankcase at three points (A, B, C) (vertically and each about 30° away from the connecting points). |
Dimensions stated in the table must be maintained. If one of the measurements obtained (A, B, C) is not within the tolerance, replace main bearing shells to match the measured main bearing journal dia. |
8 | Remove the bearing caps (3, 4) again. |
