Perform measuring procedure and the work sequence for all main bearings and perform the same procedures on the main fitted bearing.
1 Clean main bearing journals of crankshaft (1) with a chamois leather.
2 Measure main bearing journal Ø of crankshaft (1) using the micrometer in three measuring directions (D, E, F) offset by about 60°. Calculate a mean value using the three measured values.
If a measured value for the Ø of main bearing journal lies outside of tolerance, the crankshaft (1) must be machined or replaced.
3 Assign the main bearing shells according to the mean value of the main bearing journal Ø.
Note machining step (standard or deviation). All main bearing journal Ø must have the same machining step, if necessary machine or replace the crankshaft (1).
W03.20-1067-01
Main bearing
4 Clean main bearing shells (2, 5) and their mounts in the crankcase (4) and the main bearing cap (3) using a chamois leather and check for wear and damage
If wear is found, all main bearing shells (2, 5) can be replaced if all Ø of main bearing journals of crankshaft lie within tolerance.
5 Assign and insert main bearing shells (2, 5) to main bearing points.
The locking lugs must be in planned grooves (arrows). The main bearing shell (5) must be fitted into oil groove in crankcase (4). Observe oil holes.
W03.20-1072-01
Main fitted bearing
6 Measure fitted bearing journal width (H) for crankshaft (1) and note when assigning main fitted bearing shells.
W03.20-1068-01
7 Clean main fitted bearing shells (6, 8) and their mounts in crankcase (4) and main fitted bearing cap (7) using a chamois leather and check for wear and damage
If wear is found, all main fitted bearing shells (6, 8) can be replaced if all Ø of main fitted bearing journals of crankshaft lie within tolerance. Observe width of fitted bearing journal on crankshaft.
8 Assign main fitted bearing shells (6, 8) of main fitted bearing location and insert.
The locking lugs must be in planned grooves (arrows). The main fitted bearing shell (8) must be fitted into the oil groove in the crankcase (4). Observe oil holes.
W03.20-1069-11
9 Measure the shank length of the main bearing cap bolts (10)
If shank length has been exceeded, replace corresponding main bearing cap bolt (10).
10 Tighten down main bearing cap (3) and main fitted bearing cap (7) using the main bearing cap bolts (10).
The main bearing cap (3) and the main fitted bearing cap (7) have dowel pins and are marked with numbers
(e.g. 1x xxx). They must be installed in ascending order of the numbers, beginning from the front. The main bearing cap (3) or the main fitted bearing cap (7) must not get muddled up with each other. Observe tightening torque stage.
11 Attach dial indicator to quick connect calipers for inside measurements, set using the outside micrometer to the smallest dimension of the respective machining stage (observe preload of 5 mm) and set scale on dial indicator to "0".
W03.20-1070-01
Main bearing
12 Measure main bearing inside Ø in crankcase (4) using the quick connect calipers for inside measurements at the three measuring directions (A, B, C). Begin with measuring direction (A) 90° offset from separation point (arrows) and measure each remaining measuring direction (B, C) offset by about 60°. Take the mean value of the three main bearing inside Ø.
The preset dimension plus a read off measured value each produce a measured main bearing inside Ø. If one of the three main bearing inside Ø lies outside of the tolerance, repeat the measuring procedure using new main bearing shells.
W03.20-1071-01
Main fitted bearing
13 Measure main fitted bearing inside Ø in crankcase (4) using the quick connect calipers for inside measurements at the three measuring directions (A, B, C). Begin with measuring direction (A) 90° offset from separation point (arrows) and measure each remaining measuring direction (B, C) offset by about 60°. Calculate mean value of the three main fitted bearing inside Ø.
The preset dimension plus a read off measured value each produce a measured main fitted bearing inside Ø. If one of the three main fitted bearing inside Ø is outside the tolerance, repeat the measurement using new main fitted bearing shells.
14 Take away calculated mean value of main bearing journal Ø or main fitted bearing journal Ø from the calculated mean value of the main bearing inside Ø.
Example: 104.060 mm - 104.000 mm = 0.060 mm.
The main bearing and main fitted bearing shells must not be reworked. The main bearing and main fitted bearing shells are ready to install ex works and for repair purposes, also in deviations.
W03.20-1069-11
15 Only if main bearing caps (3) are removed again.
The installed main fitted bearing cap (7) is needed in an installed condition in order to support the crankshaft axially.
