Currently three types of oil pans are fitted in series production:
Thermoset plastic oil pan (engine 541.9, 542.9)
Thermoplastic oil pan (engine 541.9 only)
Light alloy oil pan (engine 541.9, 542.9)
The following are the distinguishing features of oil pans and the operations specific to them.
Thermoset plastic oil pan (engine 541.9, 542.9)
The tightening sequence, the initial torque and the final torque of the bolts (8) must always be complied with.
Otherwise leaks can occur between the crankcase and the thermoset plastic oil pan (7).

2 | Bolt | 4 | O-ring | 6 | Support (for drain screw) |
The thermoplastic oil pan (1) can be distinguished from the thermoset plastic oil pan (7) by the shape, which is arched outwards (arrows).
In addition the thermoplastic oil pan (1) has two reinforcements (5) on the inside which are not present on the light-alloy oil pan (9) and the thermoset plastic oil pan (7).
The thermoplastic oil pan (1) is no longer fastened with microencapsulated bolts like the thermoset plastic oil pan (7).
Thus, recutting the thread in the crankcase, in the timing case and in the front housing cover, and replacing the bolts (2), are no longer necessary when removing and installing the thermoplastic oil pan (1).
When removing the thermoplastic oil pan (1), the bolts (2) are left in the mounting holes in the oil pan (1).
The tightening torque of the bolts (2) has been changed.
The drain screw (3) is tightened until it audibly ratchets.
The O-ring (4) must be replaced each time the drain screw (3) is dismantled.
The tightening sequence and the tightening torque for the bolts (2) must always be complied with.
Otherwise leaks may occur between the crankcase and the thermoplastic oil pan (1).
Light alloy oil pan (engine 541.9, 542.9)
When removing the light alloy oil pan (9), the bolts (10) can be reused and the thread of the bolts (10) in the crankcase, in the timing case and in the front housing cover do not have to be recut.
The tightening sequence and the tightening torque for the bolts (10) must always be complied with.
Otherwise leaks may occur between the crankcase and the light alloy oil pan (9).
