Remove/install

 Danger

Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries

No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Disconnect electrical connection (2)

On vehicles with code 443 (Steering wheel heater)

Remove countersunk bolt (3); when doing so, counterhold steering wheel (1)

 Installation: Replace countersunk bolt (3).

Remove steering wheel (1); when doing so, guide electric lines of airbag unit through opening in steering wheel (1)

 Installation: Assign installation markings (4) on steering wheel (1) to markings (5) on steering shaft (6).

Install in the reverse order

Conduct a road test

 Tests during the road test:
Turn signal cancellation
If displacement is more than one tooth, problem-free canceling of flashers is not guaranteed.
Airbag indicator lamp
The SRS indicator lamp must not light up on full steering lock in both directions.
Position of steering wheel (1)
If steering wheel (1) is not straight, move it by max. 1 tooth.
