Remove

Remove timing case cover

Remove oil pan

Set piston of cylinder 1 to top dead center (ignition TDC) with counterholder

 Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until 0° marking on belt pulley/vibration damper aligns with marking on crankcase.

Release screws/bolts (1) in reverse order of tightening procedure, and remove

Carefully remove balance shaft housing (2) from crankcase

Mark crankshaft bearing shells (3) relative to balance shaft housing (2) and remove crankshaft bearing shells (3) and thrust plates (4)



Check

Visually inspect balance shaft housing (2), shaft bearings and gears of balance shaft housing (2) for wear and damage

 Only replace balance shaft housing (2) in combination with crankcase.

In case of a complaint



Replace balance shaft housing (2), shaft bearings or gears of balance shaft housing (2).

Check crankshaft bearing shells (3) and thrust plates (4) for wear and damage

When replacing crankshaft bearing shells (3) and thrust plates (4)



Assign crankshaft bearing shells (3) and thrust plates (4).

Install

Oil crankshaft bearing shells (3) and thrust plates (4) and install

 Note identification of crankshaft bearing shells (3).

Position assembly tool on balance shafts (5), and lock balance shafts (5) in basic position

Position balance shaft housing (2) on crankcase

 Ensure that the pilot bushing (6) is seated correctly.

Oil screws/bolts (1) on balance shaft housing (2), on thread and on bolt head contact surface, and tighten screws/bolts (1) as per tightening procedure

Set crankshaft to 30° after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 with counterholder, and remove assembly tool from balance shaft housing (2)

Check basic position of balance shafts (5)

Turn crankshaft with a counterholder and check for ease of movement

 Turn engine in direction of engine rotation.

Install oil pan

Connect diagnostic system; read out fault memory
