Extend the adjustable steering column fully

 Necessary for separating the steering coupling (1) and lower steering shaft (2).

Remove steering wheel

Remove steering column switch module

 Installation: Push steering column switch module complete with Fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact onto the steering column tube and screw in the mounting screw.

Remove bolt (3)



Pull lower steering shaft (2) upward out of steering coupling (1)

 Do not use force (hammer, strong lever action) since the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral impacts.

 Installation: Rotate the rack-and-pinion steering into the center position.

 Installation: Watch the tab on the steering coupling and the groove in the lower steering shaft while sliding the lower steering shaft all the way into the steering coupling.

Pull locking plate (4) off the steering coupling (1), in doing so lift up the lug on the locking plate using a suitable tool.

 Installation: Replace locking plate with self-locking nut. Push locking plate on far enough for its lug to latch into the steering coupling.

Remove instrument cluster

Unclip bushing (5) of steering column switch module from jacket tube (7).

Remove left cover below instrument panel

Detach electrical connector (8) on electric steering interlock control unit (N26/5)



Disconnect steering column adjustment connector (X4/39)

Remove cover (15) from jacket tube (7)

Undo screw (9) of strut (10) on crossmember below the instrument panel



Undo screw (11) of strut (10) to jacket tube (7)



Undo lower screw (12) of steering column adjustment (13) on crossmember below the instrument panel



Undo upper screw (14) of steering column adjustment (13) on crossmember below the instrument panel

 Installation: Tighten bolt (12) and bolts (14) finger-tight. The jacket tube (7) must remain movable.

First tighten the upper screws (14) and then the lower screw (12).



Slide the jacket tube (7) with lower steering shaft (2) downwards and remove through the footwell.

 Do not use force (hammer, strong lever action) since the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral impacts.

Grease the boot on the inside front of the firewall (in area of the bearing seat)
