General
The electric vehicle is equipped with a control and display concept adapted for the electric drive. The instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A11) informs the driver about all dynamic and static vehicle conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster control unit is connected to the vehicle's CAN network via the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) and exchanges data with other control units. The corresponding signals are read in or output over a direct line or sent or received via the CAN.
To convey the information to the driver the instrument cluster is equipped with the following displays:
Permanent displays (e. g. speed, power availability display, state of charge of high-voltage battery in %)
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
Warning lamps (red)(e.g. high-voltage battery warning, regenerative brake system fault)
Multifunction display (e.g. status displays, odometer, menu sequence)
The instrument cluster has two displays each on the left and right and one display in the center:
Speedometer and charge level display on left side
POWER display and power availability display on the right side
Multifunction display in the center

POWER display
In the POWER display on the right side, the currently called up electric power or the current recuperation is shown.
The basic position of the pointer in the POWER display after the system start is the "0" between "Charge" and "Economy".
The POWER display is divided into "Charge", "Economy" and "Boost".
"Charge"
In the "Charge area", the recuperated output of the vehicle during recuperation is shown. The further that the pointer moves to the left, the more energy that has been gained back.
"Economy" and "Boost"
In the areas "Economy" or "Boost", the current output is shown that the drive system is outputting to the wheels. The further that the pointer moves to the right, the more energy that is being consumed.
If the pointer of the POWER display is in the position "OFF", the vehicle is not ready for operation for the following reasons:
The drive system has not been started yet.
The charging cable is still connected to the vehicle socket.
There is insufficient output available from the high-voltage batteries.
There is a fault in the high-voltage on-board electrical system.
If the drive system is started, the pointer of the POWER display goes to the position "0". In the multifunction display, the "READY" display appears. The vehicle is ready for operation.

Multifunction display
The multifunction display is operated via buttons on the steering wheel.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the following information and more is shown on the multifunction display:
"READY" indicator (vehicle ready to drive)
Status display of transmission position (drive range) and recuperation level
Display of drive programs
Charge level of high-voltage battery
Display messages, menus and menu line
Display of outside temperature, time, and travel distance
Charge screen
The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:
Activate instrument cluster.
Operation
Indicator and warning lamp test
Control and warning messages
Display operating states.
Comfort displays
Activate instrument cluster
The instrument cluster's multifunction display is activated by:
Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
Driver door opened
Changing the status of circuit 15
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 to the instrument cluster.
Operation
The left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) can be used to display different menu levels in the multifunction display (A1/1p13) of the instrument cluster. All buttons of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) are always installed. However the available functions depend on the equipment of the vehicle.
Indicator and warning lamp test
The indicator and warning lamp test is executed automatically every time circuit 15 is switched on.
All indicator and warning lamps, excluding the indicator lamps for exterior lighting and the turn signal light, are actuated for this.
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the instrument cluster.
The indicator lamp tests end once the vehicle is started.
Control and warning messages
The instrument cluster informs the driver about the functionality and status of the installed vehicle systems.
Safety-relevant system activities or system malfunctions are shown to the driver in the form of control and warning messages in the instrument cluster.
The following display options are provided for this purpose:
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue)
Warning lamps (red)
Display, warning and control messages
The requests of control and warning messages to the instrument cluster are sent over the central gateway (N93/4).
Display operating conditions
The operating conditions display provides the driver with permanent information about the current operating conditions of the vehicle. The function includes the following subfunctions:
Display of vehicle speed
Display of travel distance
Display of available output
Display of remaining range
Display of drive programs, drive range and recuperation level
Display of charge level
Display of vehicle speed
The vehicle speed is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds.
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4) calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speeds and sends the calculated vehicle speed to the instrument cluster.
Display of travel distance
The instrument cluster calculates the traveled distance from the wheel speeds, taking the tire circumference into consideration.
The tire size is coded via the vehicle diagnosis system.
The total distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the main odometer reading is 9.999.999. It then changes back to "0".
However, the actual kilometer reading continues to count and is stored continuously in the instrument cluster's nonvolatile memory. This memory ensures that the counter reading is retained for at least 5 years, even when the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is disconnected.
The trip distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the trip distance is 9999.9. If this value is reached, the figure returns to "0". The current trip distance is also stored in the instrument cluster's nonvolatile memory.
The instrument cluster compares this with the internally stored speedometer characteristic and actuates the speedometer (A1/1p8) accordingly by means of a stepper motor.
Display of available output
The power availability display shows the currently available output of the drive system. Under normal operating conditions, the display is in the maximum range.
In the following cases, the available output may deviate from the maximum range:
At extremely high or low outside temperatures
If there is extremely high power demand for an extended period of time
If the state of charge of the high-voltage battery is very low
In the event of a malfunction in the drive system
Display of remaining range
The estimated remaining range is calculated from the ratio between the current state of charge of the high-voltage battery and the average energy consumption.
The remaining range (4) is shown in the status area (8) of the multifunction display at the bottom right.
Display of drive programs, drive range and recuperation level
Drive range and recuperation information and the selected drive program are shown in the multifunction display.
The drive ranges (P, R, N, D) are selected using the DIRECT SELECT selector lever (S16/13).
Recuperation levels are selected using the following gearshift paddles on the steering wheel:
Recuperation level pushbutton switch (+) (S109)
Recuperation level pushbutton switch (-) (S108)
The drive programs are selected using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch (A40/1s5).
Further information can be found in the separate function descriptions "Recuperation function" and "Electric vehicle function".
Display of charge level
Charging of the high voltage battery is indicated via the charge level display below the speedometer on the left side. If the drive system is ready to drive and the message "Reserve battery" appears or the battery reserve warning lamp (A1/1e76) lights up in the instrument cluster, the state of charge of the high-voltage battery has reached the reserve range.
Comfort displays
The convenience displays consist of the following functions:
Display of outside temperature
Display of time
Trip computer (TRIP) display
Additional functions
Display of outside temperature
The outside temperature is detected by the outside temperature sensor (B14).
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) reads in the signals from the outside temperature sensor directly, calculates the outside temperature and sends this to the instrument cluster. The outside temperature is displayed in the multifunction display in °C or °F to match the country specification.
In order to display the actual outside temperature, the vehicle speed must also be taken into account as a parameter (distortion by airstream).
If the vehicle is stationary, the measured temperature can differ considerably from the outside temperature. The outside temperature is therefore only included in the regulation process when the vehicle speed - for a period of at least 30 s is 30 km/h. At speeds lower than 30 km/h and when the ignition is being switched on and off, the last measured temperature value is used.
Display of time
The time is displayed in the digital clock in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
The time can be set in the corresponding menu using the steering wheel buttons.
Trip computer (TRIP) display
TRIP displays are selected in the instrument cluster menu.
TRIP provides data and information on average energy consumption, average speed and driving time.
Additional functions
The steering wheel buttons are used to call up the list of menus and select a menu. Depending on the vehicle equipment, the following menus can be called up:
Radio menu
Media menu
Telephone menu
Assist graphic menu
Service menu
Settings menu
