Remove heat shield

 Installation: Replace sheet metal nuts if necessary.

Detach crossmember (40)

Mark propeller shaft (1)

 Apply colored markings to mark the propeller shaft position relative to the transmission (2), the rear axle center assembly (50) and the propeller shaft intermediate bearing (4) so that the factory installation position can be restored when installing.

Undo bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (4)

 Installation: The bolts must not be tightened until the propeller shaft (1) is firmly connected to the rear axle center assembly (50) and transmission (2).

 Installation: Mount propeller shaft intermediate bearing (4).

Detach front flexible coupling (3a) from transmission (2)

 The front flexible coupling (3a) remains on the propeller shaft (1).

 Installation: Mount propeller shaft (1) on transmission (2).

Detach rear flexible coupling (3b) from rear axle center assembly (50)

 The rear flexible coupling (3b) remains on the propeller shaft (1).

 Installation: Mount propeller shaft (1) on rear axle center assembly (50).

Undo fitting sleeves of front flexible coupling (3a) and rear flexible
coupling (3b)

Unscrew bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (4) and remove propeller shaft (1) downwards.

 Secure propeller shaft (1) against falling.

 Installation: Pack insides of both centering sleeves with all-purpose grease.



Checking

Check propeller shaft intermediate bearing (4) for wear and damage

 In the event of detectible damage the propeller shaft center support bearing (4) must be replaced in order to avoid consequential damage to the drive
train: 

Remove/install propeller shaft center support bearing (4) and replace grooved ball bearing.

Check centering sleeves for wear

 In the event of detectible damage the appropriate centering sleeve must be replaced subject to separate repair, in order to avoid consequential damage to the drive train: 

Replace centering sleeve.

Check front flexible coupling (3a) and rear flexible coupling (3b) of propeller shaft (1) for signs of wear

 If there are visible defects the relevant part must be replaced subject to separate repair order, to prevent consequential damage to the drive train.



Check propeller shaft flex disks for signs of damage and deformation
