Remove

Remove rear axle shaft(1)

Disassemble

Release and unscrew slotted nut (9.1, 9.2)

 The slotted nut (9.2) with groove on the left rear axle shaft (1) has a left-hand thread, the slotted nut (9.1) without groove on the right-hand rear axle shaft (1) has a right-hand thread. To improve the dismantling procedure screw two wheel fastening bolts into the rear axle shaft (1) and clamp in the vise.

Remove retaining ring (8)

Press tapered roller bearing (6) off rear axle shaft (1)

Remove tapered roller bearing (6), dust shield (5) and bearing cap (2) from rear axle shaft (1)

Remove radial shaft sealing ring (3) from bearing cap (2)

Assemble

Clean sealing surface of bearing cap (2)

Install new radial shaft sealing ring (3) into bearing cap (2)

Place bearing cap (2), seal (4), dust shield (5), tapered roller bearing (6) and retaining ring (8) onto rear axle shaft (1)

 Check tapered roller bearing (6), and replace, if necessary. Replace seal (4) and retaining ring (8). Grease tapered roller bearing (6) well before fitting.

Press tapered roller bearing (6) over retaining ring (8) onto rear axle shaft (1)

The flat side of the retaining ring (8) must face towards the slotted nut (9.1, 9.2). The retaining ring (8) is fitted in order to ensure that, when pressing-on, pressure is applied to the bearing inner race only. The anti-twist lock of the retaining ring (8) must be flush with the cutout of the rear axle shaft (1). The bearing outer race must be rotated during the pressing-on procedure.
Otherwise the tapered roller bearing (6) or the rear axle shaft (1) will be damaged.

Screw on slotted nut (9.1, 9.2) and tighten

 The slotted nut (9.2) with groove on the left rear axle shaft (1) has a left-hand thread, the slotted nut (9.1) without groove on the right-hand rear axle shaft (1) has a right-hand thread.

 Secure slotted nut (9.1, 9.2) on both grooves through shearing off and bending the retaining ring (8). The slotted nuts (9.1, 9.2) must be locked in both directions of rotation.

Slide new square sealing ring (7) onto tapered roller bearing (6)


