Modification notes
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
Installation | Caution, important note: The threads in the frame floor assembly must be recut and blown out, as any adhesive residue in a thread will prevent the bolt's necessary preload force from being achieved, despite having reached the specified torque and specified angle of rotation.
| While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
| Only undo the bolts of the front rubber mount (1a) or the rear rubber mount (1b) | If the bolts of the front and rear rubber mounts (1a, 1b) are released together, a wheel wheel alignment check must be performed: | |
Perform chassis alignment.
Installation | Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
1 | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select menu item "SBC Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
2 | Secure vehicle on the lifting platform
3 | Empty air springs (41) completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
| Notes on AIRmatic | ||
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
Installation: Observe the filling process of the air springs (41i) otherwise they will be destroyed.
| |||
| |||
| |||
4 | Remove rear wheels | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
5 | Remove crossmember (35)
6.1 | Remove exhaust system at flange connection | Model 219.354 /356 /357 /372
Model 219.375 /376/ 377
6.2 | Remove rear muffler | Model 219.322
7 | Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling
8 | Detach and remove heat shields (105c, 105d)
| |||
9 | Detach propeller shaft (106) from rear axle differential (50) | The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft (106).
Installation: Attach propeller shaft (106) to differential (50).
| |||
10 | Undo fitting sleeves of flexible coupling on flange of rear axle center assembly (50)
| Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks. | ||
11 | Remove bolts from propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear part of propeller shaft (106) | Installation: Assemble propeller shaft (106) in correct order. Only tighten bolts of the propeller shaft center support bearing (106a) after attaching the flexible coupling to the differential (50).
| |||
| Long-life grease (NLGI grade 2) | ||
12 | Unhook brake cables (86) of parking brake from brackets (86a, 86b) on rear axle
13 | Unhook brake cables (86) of parking brake on cable slack adjuster
14.1 | Unclip electrical feed lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensors, from rear axle level sensor, from brake wear sensor and from right and left rear axle damping valve units from all retaining clamps (arrows) | Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
14.2 | Unclip electrical feed lines from right and left rear axle rpm sensors, brake wear sensor and from the rear axle level sensor from all retaining clamps (arrows) | Vehicles without AIRmatic
15 | Remove rear brake pads | Use hook to suspend brake caliper from vehicle to reduce loads on brake hose and avoid destroying brake hose.
Model 219.322/ 354/ 356/ 357/ 372/ 375
Model 219.376/ 377 | |||
16 | Drain fuel tank (18) | Vehicles with diesel engine
Vehicles with gasoline engine
17 | Remove filler hose (17) of fuel tank (18) | Check filler hose (17) and clamps for damage, replace if necessary.
18 | Support rear axle on rear axle center assembly (50) using transmission jack and transmission platform
19 | Detach right and left shock absorber (42) on rear axle from spring control arms
20 | Undo front rear axle carrier (1) on frame floor, to do so undo bolts of front rubber mount (1a) | Installation: Recut and blow out the threads in the frame floor assembly to ensure a perfect threaded connection.
Use new bolts. | |||
| |||
21 | Lower transmission jack | When lowering rear axle carrier (1), ensure that the fuel tank (18) is not damaged by bolts (2a, 2b) and filler hose (17).
Lower far enough for the front rubber mount (1a) to be removed and installed.
22 | Remove front rubber mounts (1a) of rear axle suspension | Always replace front rubber mounts (1a) in pairs.
| |||
| |||
Cleaner from package | |||
Antifriction agent | |||
23 | Install in the reverse order
24 | Adjust parking brake
25 | Check oil level in rear axle center assembly (50) and correct if necessary | In order to avoid damage to the rear axle center assembly (50), it is absolutely essential to follow the work procedure and the Specifications for Operating Fluids.
| |||
| |||
| |||
| |||
Cleaning spray, Loctite 7063 (150ml)
Sealant, Omnifit 100H (50 g)
26.1 | Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select "Initial startup after repair"/"Remove/install brake pads" menu item. Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
Danger! | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work | Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
26.2 | Press the brake pedal several times until the brake pads contact the brake disks | Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal. |
