When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected

Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)

 The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:

Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".

Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.



Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory

Remove front wheel



Remove/install wheels

Remove brake disc

Pull off hub cap (9e)



Undo hexagon socket head screw (9i), remove clamp nut (9d) and remove outer tapered roller bearing (9m)

 Installation: Adjust wheel bearing play.

Pull off front wheel hub cover (9).

 Installation: Coat radial sealing ring with grease and, if necessary, pack space between lip and outer tapered roller bearing (9m) with grease. Push front wheel hub with inner tapered roller bearing and radial sealing ring onto steering knuckle pin (5a).

 Installation: Pack front wheel hub with grease.

Check

Check brake cover plate (35) for damage

 Replace if necessary.

 Installation: When using a new brake cover plate (35) ensure that the rubber grommet for sealing the rpm sensor bore is pushed onto the rpm sensor.

Check steering knuckle spindle (5a) for discoloration and wear, and check bearing surface of radial sealing ring

 Discoloration can be caused by the heat generated as a result of improperly adjusted bearing clearance; if necessary: 

Replace stub axle.

Check front wheel hub (9)

 Check the threaded socket and the rotor teeth for damage, if necessary: 

Install new front wheel hub (9).

Check the lateral and radial runout of the front wheel hub (9)

Permissible lateral runout

If permitted measurements are exceeded: 

Install new front wheel hub (9).

Inspecting tapered roller bearing and bearing races

 Damaged bearings cannot be replaced; if necessary: 

Install new front wheel hub (9).

Install in the reverse order

Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS

Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work

Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.

 Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
