1 | Turn Steering to middle position and remove ignition key | Determine number of steering wheel turns between left and right full lock. Turn steering wheel back from full lock through one half of determined value. | |
2 | Fold up floor covering (5) in area of jacket tube (2) until the bolt (1) is accessible | Fold up floor covering (5) carefully otherwise floor covering (5) could be damaged. | |
3 | Remove bolt (1) and detach jacket tube (2) from rack-and-pinion steering (4) | Replace self-locking bolt (1). | |

4 | Unclip boot (3) | ||
5 | Fold up floor covering (5) on right under instrument panel until electrical connectors (6, 7) are accessible | Fold up floor covering (5) carefully otherwise floor covering (5) could be damaged. | |
6 | Disconnect electrical connectors (6, 7) and route electrical lines (8) through opening into engine compartment | Installation: Check for correct seating of grommet for electrical lines (8) in the splash wall. | |
7 | Remove transverse control arm | Do not pry off the transverse control arm from the steering knuckle. | |
8 | Detach tie rod ends from steering knuckles | ||

9.1 | Remove link rods on stabilizer bar (16) | Only for engine 639.9 | |

10 | Detach rubber retainers (10) from front axle carrier (9) | ||
11 | Remove bolts (11) and take off bracket (12) | | |
12 | Position removal fixture (13) under front axle carrier (9) | The base jacks from the companies Mazzola and AS Hydraulic can be used according to choice. | |

13 | Secure front axle carrier (9) using belt (14) of removal fixture (13) | | |
14 | Remove bolts (15) | | |
15 | Lower removal fixture (13) with front axle carrier (9) | Observe electrical lines (8). When replacing the front axle carrier (9), the rack-and-pinion steering (4), the lower transmission bearing (17) and the stabilizer bar (16) have to be modified. | |
Installation: Ensure that the boot (3) in the firewall is seated correctly. | |||
