Remove

Move DIRECT SELECT lever to "N" position.

Raise vehicle.

Remove propeller shaft with flex disk.

Remove engine crossmember at rear.

 Do not remove support tools.

Remove output flange.

Remove radial shaft sealing ring (3).


Carefully remove radial shaft sealing ring (3) and do not damage seat in cap (9) of transfer case (4). Use clean cloth as base.
Leaks can occur otherwise.

Clean

Clean seat of radial shaft sealing ring (3).

Assembly cleaner

Check

Check seat of radial shaft sealing ring (3) in cap (9) of transfer case (4) for damage.

If corresponding findings are present,



replace cap (9) of transfer case (4).

Disassemble, assemble and seal

Install

Coat sealing lip of new radial shaft sealing ring (3) with transmission oil.



Check oil level in transfer case (4).

 The transfer case(4) is connected to the oil circuit of the automatic transmission(5). This is why the oil level in the transfer case (4) can only be checked and corrected by means of an oil level check in the automatic transmission (5).

If corresponding findings are present,



Correct oil level.



Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
