Remove/install

Remove cylinder head cover.

Install hold-down tool (01) of exhaust camshaft (2a) and intake camshaft (2e) with holding devices (02a, 02e).

 Use inserts with a diameter of 29 mm for vehicles with camshaft positioners (1).
Use inserts with a diameter of 26 mm for vehicles without camshaft positioners (1).

 Ensure use of the correct bearing bracket on the holding devices (02a, 02e).

Use suitable tool to pry off cover (4) and remove chain tensioner (5).

 Screw/bolt, chain tensioner to bracket

Unfasten control valve (1s) of respective camshaft positioner (1).



Specified engine oils (service) - Overview

 Lubricate threads and bolt head contact surface of the control valves (1s).
Tighten control valves (1) evenly without discontinuity and with torque.

Remove control valve (1s) of respective camshaft positioner (1).

Take off camshaft positioners (1) from exhaust camshaft (2a) and intake camshaft (2e) and remove.

 Lay on or remove timing chain when installing or removing camshaft positioner (1).

Remove hold-down tools (2n) of exhaust camshaft (2a) and intake camshaft (2e).

 Installation:
The hold-down tools (2n) must be reinstalled in the same position (mark if necessary).
The exhaust camshaft (2a) and intake camshaft (2e) or the cylinder head (7) will be damaged otherwise.

Specified engine oils (service) - Overview

The cams on the intake camshaft (2e) must be pointing upright at an angle after inserting intake camshaft (2e) on cylinder 1.
There is otherwise risk of breakage of the intake camshaft (2e) and exhaust camshaft (2a).

 Installation: Wet compensating elements and camshaft bearing points with engine oil.

 Installation: Ensure that the intake camshaft (2e) is installed in the full stroke position (picture).
The full stroke position can be recognized by the 6.5 mm wide gap (11) between the carrier shaft (10) and the front cam piece (12a). There should be no gap (arrow) between the camshaft piece at the rear (12b) and the high-pressure pump drive cams (13). Adjust the camshaft piece at the front (12a) or the camshaft piece at the rear (12b) by hand if necessary.

Check diameter of camshaft bearing journals for wear and replace intake camshaft (2e) or exhaust camshaft (2a) if necessary.

Check intake camshaft (2e), exhaust camshaft (2a) and bearings in cylinder head as well as cylinder head cover for galling.

If complaints are present,



Replace camshafts, cylinder head cover and cylinder head.
