With the retarder installed and ABS the retarder may cut out during brake application and when the ABS is regulating.
This cutout procedure reduces the brake power pro rata by that of the retarder, which is compensated by an individual increase in pedal force adapted to the specific traffic situation.
This control response is normal.
When switching the retarder by hand, this is activated automatically again after the ABS regulation. When switching the retarder by foot, the activation takes place after the ABS regulation with the pressing of the stop lamp switch (brake pedal in park position).
With combined operating by hand and by foot, both functions can be utilized independently of one another, associated with the effects described above.
