Service Information: Wheel bolts

 For environmental protection reasons, as from 01.07.2008, the surface protection for component parts may lno longer contain any chromium(VI) oxide connections.

This is why modified wheel bolts without a chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 98 07 as from vehicle identification end number 458174 (1) were installed in series production.

In the replacement parts department, the previous wheel bolts with chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 67 07 up to vehicle identification end number 458173 (2) may still be distributed.

The directive only applies for new vehicles placed into service.

 Therefore, the following points must be observed for subsequent wheel bolt orders:

 A mixed installation of the wheel bolts on the vehicle is not permissible due to the different tightening torques.

 The previous wheel bolts with chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 67 07 up to vehicle identification end number 458173 (2) may still be used up to this cited vehicle identification end number only.

 The modified wheel bolts without chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 98 07 as from vehicle identification end number 458174 (1) may still be used up to this cited vehicle identification end number only.

 As a differentiating feature, a Mercedes­Benz star is visible in the recess on the bolt head of the previous wheel bolts with chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 67 07 up to vehicle identification end number 458173 (2).

The tightening torque for the previous wheel bolts with chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 67 07 up to vehicle identification end number 458173 (2) is:

 Steel wheel: 180 Nm

 Light alloy wheel: 150 Nm

The tightening torque for the modified wheel bolts without chromium(VI) oxide connection A 000 990 98 07 up to vehicle identification end number 458174 (1) is:

 Steel wheel: 200 Nm

 Light alloy wheel: 180 Nm
