Removing

Remove cylinder head cover

Check basic position of camshafts and allow the piston for cylinder 1 to remain at TDC

Remove chain tensioner

Mark timing chain (3) relative to the camshaft sprockets (2)

Remove bolts for the camshaft bearing cap (5) step by step and remove camshaft bearing cap (5)

Unhook exhaust camshaft (7) from the timing chain (3) and remove

 Cover over timing case recess with a clean cloth. Engine damage can occur otherwise due to parts falling in.

 Secure timing chain (3) against falling down.

Remove bolts for camshaft bearing cap (4) step by step and remove camshaft bearing cap (4)

Unhook intake camshaft (6) from the timing chain (3) and remove

Remove camshaft sprockets (2) for exhaust camshaft (7) or the intake camshaft (6)

Only when replacing camshaft sprocket (2) or intake camshaft (6) or exhaust camshaft (7).

Checking

Check hydraulic compensation elements for damage and ease of movement

 Replace the hydraulic compensation elements if there is damage or sluggishness.

Remove/install valve play compensation elements

Install

Insert camshaft sprocket (2) for intake camshaft (6) in timing chain (3) and lay intake camshaft (6) in the bearing halves of the cylinder head

 Note the marking on the timing chain (3).

Lubricate roller-type cam follower and camshaft bearing points.

Insert intake camshaft (6) in such a way that the marking (arrow A) is aligned with the marking (arrow B) and the hold-down device (8) can be tightened down free of tension.

Tighten down hold-down device (8) for intake camshaft (6) and install camshaft bearing cap (4)

 Tighten down camshaft bearing cap (4) step by step.

Check intake camshaft (6) for unobstructed movement; reinsert if necessary.

Remove hold-down device (8) for intake camshaft (6), insert camshaft bearing cap (4) and tighten down bolts (8)



Insert camshaft sprocket (2) for exhaust camshaft (7) in timing chain (3) and lay exhaust camshaft (7) in the bearing halves of the cylinder head

 Note the marking on the timing chain (3).

Insert exhaust camshaft (7) in such a way that the marking (arrow A) is aligned with the marking (arrow B) and the hold-down device (8) can be tightened down free of tension.

Tighten down hold-down device (8) for exhaust camshaft (7) and install camshaft bearing cap (5)

 Tighten down camshaft bearing cap (5) step by step.

Check exhaust camshaft (7) for unobstructed movement; reinsert if necessary.
