Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Replace self-locking nuts

Secure vehicle against rolling

Raise vehicle

So that the propeller shaft can be turned for removal.

Detach lower engine compartment paneling

Only perform the steps necessary for removing the paneling under the transmission.

Detach propeller shaft (1) from retarder (2) and from rear axle (3)

Before detaching the propeller shaft:

- Identify sliding sleeve (4) relative to propeller shaft (1),

- and bind the propeller shaft together via both joints by means of a suitable cable.

Installation: If the propeller shaft has been separated, ensure that the markings are aligned when pushing the propeller shaft and sliding sleeve together.
