Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

Remove/install

Remove spare tire

Actuate brake several times in order to depressurize compressed air system

Tilt cab into repair position

Disconnect compressed air line (1) from pressure limiting valve (2)

Remove shield (3)

Detach drive shaft (4) from transmission

 Screw/bolt, drive shaft to transmission flange

Detach transmission wiring harness (5) from transmission

 Installation: Replace cable tie.

Mark and disconnect all electrical connectors that are on transmission wiring harness (5)

 Installation: Pay attention to the markings on the electrical connectors.

Mark and disconnect all compressed air lines that are on transmission wiring harness (5)

 Installation: Observe the markings on the compressed air lines.

Loosen vent lines of front and rear axle at transmission

Mark installation position of torque ball housing of rear axle relative to transfer case housing (13)

Remove screws/bolts (7) from torque ball housing

 Bolt, torque ball housing to transfer case

Tie the torque tube (9) to the frame using a tensioning strap


The torque tube (9) must be fixed in the installation position.
Otherwise the brake lines can be damaged.

Pull rear axle away from transfer case housing (13) using chain hoist until screws/bolts (11) of propeller shaft are accessible

 Installation: Observe the installation position marked on the torque ball housing.
Clean the sealing surfaces on the torque ball housing and transfer case housing (13) and coat with sealant.

Remove torque ball shell halves in torque ball housing of rear axle and mark installation location of torque ball shell halves

 Installation: The torque ball shell halves must be installed again at the same position.
Clean the torque ball shell halves and coat with long-life grease.

Insert a wooden block between torque tube and transfer case housing (13)

Remove screws/bolts (11)

 Bolt, propeller shaft to rear axle output shaft flange

Mark installation position of torque ball housing of front axle relative to transfer case housing (13)

Remove screws/bolts (6) from torque ball housing

 Bolt, torque ball housing to transfer case

Tie the torque tube (8) to the frame using a tensioning strap

The torque tube (8) must be fixed in the installation position.
Otherwise the brake lines can be damaged.

Pull front axle away from transfer case housing (13) using chain hoist until screws/bolts (10) of propeller shaft (12) are accessible

 Installation: Observe the installation position marked on the torque ball housing.
Clean the sealing surfaces on the torque ball housing and transfer case housing (13) and coat with sealant.

Remove torque ball shell halves in torque ball housing of front axle and mark installation location of torque ball shell halves

 Installation: The torque ball shell halves must be installed again at the same position.
Clean the torque ball shell halves and coat with long-life grease.

Remove bolts (10)

 Bolt, propeller shaft to front axle output flange

Remove compressed air line (14)

 From the air drier up to the first connection before the transmission.

Detach bracket (15) of brake lines

Remove sensor for forward gear, reverse gear

 The sensor for the forward/reverse gear is above the shift cover on the transmission housing.

 Forward, reverse gear sensor to transmission

Detach solenoid valves from transmission and place to one side with compressed air lines still connected

 The solenoid valves are above the right transmission bracket (18).

Remove screw/bolts (16) from right transmission bracket (18)

Remove the upper spacer between the right transmission bracket (18) and transmission

Remove screw/bolts (17) from left transmission bracket (19)

 Screw/bolt, left transmission bracket to transmission

Remove the upper spacer between the left transmission bracket (19) and transmission

Loosen screws/bolts (20, 21)

Raise transmission slightly using pit jack

Remove bolts (20, 21)

Remove lower spacer between right transmission bracket (18) and transmission as well as between left transmission bracket (19) and transmission

Remove transmission

Adjust preload of torque tube to torque ball housing

During the lowering operation, check that all lines and components between the transmission and frame are free of tension.
Otherwise damage could occur to the lines or components.

 Installation: Before the transmission is installed, the pretension of the torque tubes (8, 9) relative to the torque ball housings must be set.
