Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 | Lift the front axle and support it on trestles | The vehicle should be on a level, flat surface, with the engine stopped, parking brake set, and chocks on the rear wheels.
2 | Drain the compressed air system
3 | Remove the wheel on the side from which you want to access the axle sleeve (6)
4 | Remove the brake drum | ||
5 | Remove the ABS sensor | For vehicles equipped with an ABS braking system.
6 | Remove the wheel hub |
| |
7 | Remove the brake shoes |
| |
8 | Remove the brake bracket |
| |
9 | Disconnect the compressed air hose from the membrane cylinder
10 | Remove the corresponding membrane cylinder |
| |
11 | Remove the eccentric brake shaft and the bearing bridge |
| |
12 | Remove the steering column from the steering arm |
| |
Only if the axle sleeve in question is on the same side as the steering column.
13 | Remove the connecting rod (21) from the side corresponding to the axle sleeve |
| |
14 | Remove the steering arm (16) and the linking arm (12) (if any) |
| |
15 | Loosen the nuts (10, 14) and remove the locking pins (9, 15) from the axle beam (22) | Using a pin puller to remove the locking pins.
Observe the correct position and direction of the locking pins for future reference, since the incorrect assembly thereof can interfere with the wheel stop screw.
16 | Remove the top and bottom lock rings (2)
17 | Remove the top and bottom retaining caps (3)
18 | Remove the kingpin (13) | Use a brass billet to tap the kingpin down.
Note where the needle bearings were installed, for future reference.
19 | Remove the offsetting washers (7), the thrust bearing (18) and the axle sleeve (6) | For the LH side of the axle, press down the axle sleeve assembly to release the edge of the sliding disk thrust bearing and remove the assembly from the axle beam cuff.
The shaft sleeve on the RH side (side without the steering arm) features a thrust roller bearing instead of a sliding disk. The difference in relation to the sliding disc is that the thrust roller bearing shows no protrusion at the top. When removing the thrust roller bearing from the axle beam cuff, pressing it down on the axle sleeve is not necessary.
20 | Remove the sealing ring (8) from the top hole of the axle sleeve (6)
21 | Remove the needle bearings (4, 5) from the top and bottom holes of the axle sleeve (6) | Use a suitable puller to remove the bearings.
| Check | ||
22 | Clean and check the axle sleeve (6) holes and the axle beam cuff (22) | Carefully inspect all holes for damage, cracks, or wear. If any of the holes shows significant damage, replace the component.
Straightening or aligning the axle sleeve and the beam are not allowed. When required, replace them.
If replacing the kingpin is necessary, the entire set relates to the axle sleeve should be replaced.
| Install | ||
23 | Install new needle bearings (4, 5) on the axle sleeve (6) | Install the needle bearings in the same number and position previously observed. Make sure that the arrangement of the bearings is such as to allow installing the retaining caps and the lock rings.
24 | Install a new sealing ring (8) on the top hole of the axle sleeve (6) | The ring should be installed with the slotted part facing downward and be flush against the lower edge of the shaft sleeve top hole.
25 | Temporarily install the axle sleeve (6), the thrust bearing (18) the offsetting washers (7) and the kingpin (13) on the axle beam cuff (22) | The LH side thrust bearing features a sliding disk, and the RH side features rollers. The sliding disk thrust bearing should be installed with the protruding part pointing upwards.
Pay attention to the correct placement of the kingpin in relation to the attachment points on the beam cuff.
26 | Measure the axial play between the upper surface of the beam cuff and the axle sleeve | Axle housing end play: 0.17 mm.
Washer thickness: 1.00 to 2.80 mm.
If the measured play is not compliant, remove the shaft sleeve and adjust with the offsetting washers.
27 | Install the kingpin (13), the locking pins (9, 15) and nuts (10, 14) | Install the upper lock pin from the rear of the axle, and the lower lock pin from the front part thereof.
Use new nuts. | |||
.Master pin lock bolt | |||
28 | Install the top and bottom caps (3) on the axle sleeve (6) | Replace the top and bottom retaining caps with the O-rings.
29 | Install new grease fittings (1)
30 | Install the connecting and steering arms |
| |
Use a chemical lock on the screws.
Loctite 277 | |||
.Steering bar arm bolt and connection to the front axle
31 | Install the connecting rod |
| |
Use a new cotter pin (20).
.Ball joints castle nut for the tie rod
32 | Install the steering column |
| |
Only if it has been removed.
.Steering bar to the pitman arm
33 | Install the eccentric brake shaft and the bearing bridge |
| |
34 | Install the membrane cylinder |
| |
35 | Connect the compressed air hose to the membrane cylinder
36 | Install the brake bracket |
| |
37 | Install the brake shoes |
| |
38 | Install the wheel hub |
| |
39 | Install the ABS sensor | For vehicles equipped with an ABS braking system.
40 | Install the brake drum
41 | Install the wheel | ||
42 | Check and adjust the wheel stops
43 | Lower the vehicle | Start the engine and charge the compressed air system up to working pressure. Then, run a test drive with the vehicle to prove the dynamic behavior thereof. |
