Before performing maintenance work, read through the technical sheet, such as Operation manual and workshop information. Always have the maintenance work performed within the intended intervals. Otherwise, it may cause malfunctions or faults on the safety systems. Thus, it may cause an accident and cause injury to yourself or to others.

Vehicle maintenance categories

The scope and frequency of maintenance works are established, first, by the different conditions of vehicle usage.

The variable maintenance system at Mercedes-Benz complies with this requirements, enabling the choice of maintenance groups with different maintenance intervals.

Maintenance intervals depend on the use of the vehicle.

For that reason, asses the conditions to which your vehicle will be predominantly submitted to in a critical way. Then, consciously choose, together with your Mercedes-Benz Dealer, the required maintenance category.

Heavy duty

- Use of the vehicle under extreme conditions, operating in the maximum effort or load limits.

Examples:

- Vehicles that drive predominantly in large cities and roads with intense traffic.

- Traffic with frequent “stop and go”

- Vehicles used in regular services of urban delivery.

Vehicles for special services (concrete mixers, dump trucks, dump compactors, vehicle with total traction). For these vehicles, the maintenance per hour of service or fuel consumption is recommended.

- Constant travels in unpaved roads or in poor condition.

- Traffic in extremely short distances with high percentage of engine operation in idle speed or excessive actuation of the engine start.

- Use in construction work sites without road traffic, in extremely difficult terrains, with heavy load.

Mixed duty

- Regional traffic with few highways.

Road service

- Vehicles that predominantly drive on highways or paved roads in good conditions, with average speed high and few intermediate stops.

If, due to the vehicle sale or due to the changes in the operation conditions, the maintenance category has to be changed, this change must be made with the participation of a Mercedes-Benz Dealer and communicated to Mercedes-Benz do Brasil Ltda.

DAILY INSPECTION

The daily inspection consists of the checking under the responsibility of the driver, that have to be carried out systematically before starting the vehicle's daily operation, to ensure its operating and circulation safety.

The vehicle's maintenance schedule does not include the vehicle's daily inspection work.

To be carried out before starting the engine

- Drain the water accumulated in the fuel prefilter

- Check the general tire conditions and inflation

- Check for leaks in general (coolant, oil, fluids and fuel)

- Check the operation of the headlights, running lights, turn signal lights, brake lights and reversing lights

To be carried out after starting the engine

- Check the brake system air pressure

Check the tachograph operation

- Check the operation of the alarm buzzer and the warning lights

- Check the fuel filling

To be carried out at least once a week

- Check the condition of the Poly-V drive belts

- Clean the windshield, glasses and rear-view mirrors

- Check the operation of door locks and, latches

- Check the fluid level of the clutch actuation system

- Check the filling of the windshield washer reservoir

- Clean the headlights and lamps

- Check the operation of the windshield wipers and the condition of wiper arms and blades actuation linkage

- Check tightness of fastening bolts on the wheels

- Check and adjust tire inflation pressure, including the spare wheel

Vehicles with manual brake adjusters: adjust the wheel brakes

- For vehicles utilized predominantly in off-road conditions, grease the drive shafts universal joints

Semitrailer tractors

Detach the semitrailer and clean the kingpin's table and the top face of the 5th wheel, on the locking mechanism, at the locking claw of the 5th wheel on the kingpin.

Utilize heavy-duty grease with extreme pressure additive.

Adjust the play of the kingpin's locking assembly observing the instructions of the 5th wheel manufacturer.

Considerations about changing the engine oil

The interval to change engine oil and oil filter is dependent on:

· the engine oil quality

the fuel: sulfur content in fuel

· the use conditions of the vehicle

· the time: at most every 12 months

Engine oils

The maximum engine oil change interval is achieved utilizing engine oils of special high quality (products according to class MB 228.3, indicated in the Lubricants Book).

Engine oil viscosity SAE class should be chosen according to the average temperature of the region at the respective season of the year.

The utilization of non approved engine oils can restrict the rights on Warranty claims.

Any dealership or Authorized Service Station can provide additional information on this subject.

Sulfur content in the fuel

If the fuel sulfur content is above 0.3 up to 0.8% in weight, the engine oil change interval shall be reduced by half.

If fuel sulfur content is above 0.8% in weight, the engine oil change in any class of maintenance shall be as indicated for operation in severe conditions.
