Service Information bulletin: Checking squib before replacing emergency tensioning retractor or belt buckle tensioner

9.2.12

MODEL all

Due to recent events we would like to notify you that emergency tensioning retractors or belt buckle tensioners are being increasingly unnecessarily replaced with the complaint "Resistance too high" or "Resistance too low" .

Frequently however, the inspection does not find any actual fault.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When working on the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) observe the safety instructions (AS91.00-Z-0001-01A/B).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following test is to be performed before any replacement is made:

Detach the plug-type coupling from the squib of the rejected component and mount the repair wiring harness - while doing so make sure that the plug connector is locked properly into place.

Perform resistance measurement at the end of the stripped repair lines. Specified value: 1.8...2.5 Ω.

If the test result is in the specified range, the component

is OK. The complaint can then be found in the plug connector/line area.

Perform the following measures after completing the work:

Make sure that all components in the

supplemental restraint system are properly installed and connected again. Reconnect all separated electrical connectors.

The part numbers for the available repair wiring harnesses are available in the EPC.

Danger!

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.
