Removal, installation

1 Slacken clip (4) and pull off hose (5) at oil separator (3).

2 Slacken clip (1) and take oil separator (3) off the crankcase.

Installation note

Replace O-ring on oil separator.

Tighten clip (1), 8 Nm.

3 Install in the reverse order.

Note

Do not damage oil separator when performing maintenance and repair work. Even minor damage can cause failure of the oil separator. A damaged oil separator must always be replaced. If there is a repeated engine leak or engine oil in the intake system, test oil separator.

Testing

1 Park vehicle on level ground. The engine must be at normal operating temperature. Check oil level, adjust to correct level if necessary.

2 Connect the suitably long end of the water gauge to the dipstick guide tube and fill the water gauge up to the "zero marking" with water.

3 Start engine and observe water level in the gauge.

4 An overpressure exists in the crankcase if the water column at the free hose end (left) is higher than at the connected hose end (right) (maximum +10 mm water column).

5 The correct value is indicated by the difference between the two water levels.

6 A vacuum exists in the crankcase if the water column at the connected hose end (right) is higher than at the free hose end (left) (maximum - 100 mm water column).

7 The correct value is indicated by the difference between the two water levels.

Note

The pressure in the crankcase must be between +10 mm water column (overpressure) and
-100 mm water column (vacuum) over the entire engine speed range.

The causes for the limits being exceeded may be:

If excessive vacuum: Remedy:

- Air intake opening to diaphragm blocked. - Clear air intake opening.

- Replace air intake hose.

- Diaphragm does not close because of - Replace oil separator.
