The refrigerant circuit can be subdivided into two systems: The high pressure and low pressure system.

High pressure system
After the refrigerant has cooled the air in the evaporator, it is returned to the A/C compressor. Here the gaseous refrigerant is compressed again and therefore heated up.

The refrigerant then flows to the condenser. Here the energy added in the compressor and the heat picked up in the evaporator is released to the surroundings. This cools down the refrigerant which liquefies.

To keep the refrigerant free of contamination, it is filtered by a molecular sieve and the air bubbles removed in the receiver/drier

located between the condenser and expansion valve.

Low pressure system
When the A/C compressor is switched on the refrigerant cooled in the condenser is sprayed into the evaporator through the expansion valve.

The refrigerant evaporates and absorbs the heat of evaporation required to evaporate the refrigerant from the fresh air flowing through. This cools the air and the humidity is condensed out.

The gas expanded by the expansion valve then returns to the A/C compressor where it is compressed again.
