MODEL 639.601 /603 /605 /701 /703 /705 /711 /713 /811 /813 /815 up to 31.3.06 with CODE (EN4) Auto pilot system with TMC interface, large display

The navigation system is used to help determine the location of the vehicle, the direction of travel and the distance to the destination (according to the destination entry). The navigation system calculates the data required for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation). The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). A navigation processor with CD drive for the digital map data is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) shows the message "Please insert navigation CD type DX". This message is displayed to ensure that the customers insert the correct navigation CD.

The CD drive in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) can also play back audio CDs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Destination entry

The destination is entered menu-assisted on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) and is processed by the integrated navigation processor.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) provides the following options for destination entry:

Address entry

Destination memory

Destination via map

Special destinations (e.g. railroad station, airport etc.)

Travel guide

Last destination

Predictive text input

The predictive speller refers to the entry of the destination and the street during destination-oriented navigation. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus. The "National Destinations" submenu is subdivided into an additional submenu.

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

Global Positioning System (GPS) position finding

Basic position finding (dead reckoning)

Map-based position finding

The navigation processor integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) constantly compares the position finding results of these 3 processes to calculate the most likely position.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route.

With the dynamic destination-oriented navigation system, the route is calculated automatically including traffic information, either free of charge via the traffic message channel (TMC) or via an external provider by telephone (with code (EH3) Portable CTEL preinstallation, networked). The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

Destination-oriented navigation

Destination-oriented navigation begins once the navigation processor integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) has calculated the route. 3 types of display can be selected for graphic destination-oriented navigation:

With a map

With a map and symbol display before turning-off points

With a symbol display (sign symbols)

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the 3 types of presentation. In all instances the destination-oriented navigation is backed up by voice outputs over the vehicle speakers.
