Navigation, function

The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination (after entering the destination) are determined with the aid of the navigation system. The data necessary to reach the destination (navigation) are calculated with the navigation system. The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

If the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD) is not inserted, the note "Please insert navigation DVD" appears in the navigation display. This note is intended to ensure that the correct DVD is inserted.

The DVD disk drive in the navigation processor (N41/1) can only read navigation DVDs; the DVD ROM disk drive in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can play both video DVDs and audio CDs.

Destination entry

The destination is entered using menus on the control unit and is processed by the navigation processor (N41/1).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) offers the following options for destination input:

via destination memory

Destination entry

Special destinations (e.g. railway station, airport etc.)

Last destination input

Entry of intermediate destinations

Dynamic route calculation

Address input

Destination with map

Travel guide

Destination memory with individual destinations

Predictive text input

While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The predictive text input feature refers to the entry of the destination and street during navigation. The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus. The "National Destinations" menu is subdivided into an additional submenu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dynamic supplementation

The dynamic supplementation is realized when the destination is input manually. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following methods:

Basic position finding (dead reckoning)

Global positioning system (GPS) position finding

Map-supported map matching

The navigation processor (N41/1) calculates the most likely position by constantly comparing the location results of these

3 methods.

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor (N41/1) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route. When the dynamic navigation system is being used, the calculation of the route is influenced by the integration of traffic information, either free of charge via the radio data system (RDS), traffic message channel (TMC) or subject to a fee via a provider over the telephone. The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor (N41/1).

Route guidance

Navigation starts once the navigation processor (N41/1) has carried out the route calculation 3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:

with map

with map and symbol display before turn-off points

with symbol display (route control symbols)

It is possible to change arbitrarily between three types of presentation. The navigation is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
