23.9.04

MODEL 169.0, 245.2
with CODE (529) HIGH Class Japan
up to Model Year 8

After activating the navigation system by pressing the "NAVI" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), the location of the vehicle, the direction and the distance to the destination (after entering destination) are determined. The data required for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation) are calculated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

If the digital navigation versatile disk (DVD) is not inserted, the note "Please insert navigation DVD" appears on the display.

The purpose of this note is to ensure that the user inserts the correct DVD.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Destination input

The destination is entered menu-assisted on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and is processed by the integrated navigation processor. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) offers the following options for destination input:

Address input

Destination memory

Destination with map

Special destinations (e.g. railway station, airport etc.)

Travel guide

Last destinations

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dynamic supplementation

The dynamic supplementation is realized by manual input of the destination. When entering the destination, the missing letters are supplemented by the entry aid (speller) from the list present. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

Basic location finding (dead reckoning)

Global positioning system (GPS) position finding

Map-based position finding

The navigation processor in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates the location of the vehicle by constantly comparing the positioning results from these 3 methods to obtain the most probable vehicle position.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route.

With dynamic destination, automatic route calculation is influenced by including the traffic information from the integrated FM multiplex tuner in combination with an external VICS control unit which is optional, however, necessary for proper functionA2/37.The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Destination-oriented navigation

Destination-oriented navigation begins once the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has calculated the route. The following 3 types of display can be selected for graphic destination-oriented navigation:

with map

with map and symbol display before turn-off points

with symbol display (guide symbols)

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the 3 types of presentation. The destination-oriented navigation is, in all cases, basically supported by voice output from the vehicle speakers.
