Remove/install steering shaft

Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.

Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above
100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

Disconnect ground cable from battery

Turn steering gear to center position and latch ignition lock into place

 The position of the steering gear must not be altered again for the entire duration of the work procedure

Remove central electric unit

Remove steering wheel

with code SA5, Driver airbag.

Remove clock spring contact

with code SA5, driver airbag.

 Unscrew retaining bolts just enough to be able to remove the clock spring contact. Do not twist clock spring contact and do not disassemble

Remove combination switch

Disconnect vacuum lines and electrical connector from ignition lock

 Mark vacuum lines

Detach spring for brake pedal from steering column

Undo fitted bolt (1) on universal joint (2)



 Installation: Install universal joint on drive shaft

Unscrew bolt (3) in steering column bracket



Drill out shear-off screw (4) in steering column bracket

 Installation: Tighten the bolt until it shears off

Press steering shaft with universal joint (2) off steering gear drive shaft

Pull steering shaft out of rubber grommet at floor of vehicle

 Installation: Check rubber grommet is correctly seated

Install in the reverse order
