Modification notes
29.6.10 | Value modified: Self-locking nut, flexible coupling to rear propeller shaft or rear axle differential., M12 |
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system | Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
Installation | Caution, important note: The threads in the frame floor assembly must be recut and blown out as any adhesive residue in a thread will prevent the bolt from achieving the required preload force, even when tightened to the specified torque and specified angle of rotation.
| While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
Installation | Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.
1 | Relieve pressure of rear suspension struts (41) using the STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnostic system until only residual pressure remains
2 | Remove rear wheels. | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
3 | Remove complete exhaust system
4 | Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling
5 | Unscrew bolts (1), remove flexible coupling (12) and propeller shaft (106) from the rear axle differential (50) | Socket
| |||
6 | Unhook brake cables (112a) on automatic cable slack adjuster of parking brake | See rear brake cable.
7 | Remove expansion rivet (72d) and covers (72c) from spring control arms (72)
8 | Unscrew bolts (35), remove left and right fixed brake caliper (31b) from wheel carriers | Fasten left and right fixed brake caliper (31b) using cable ties to underfloor.
| |||
9 | Disconnect electrical connectors at rear axle
10 | Remove rear suspension strut (41) of spring control arms (72), to do so unscrew bolts (41c)
11 | Mounting guard plates | Guard plate
12 | Prop up rear axle (2) using assembly fixture and telescoping transmission jack under the rear axle differential (50) | Assembly top for mounting rear axle gear
13 | Detach rear axle (2) from underbody, to do so unscrew bolts (3, 4, 5) | Installation: Recut thread in frame floor assembly and blow out. Use new bolts.
Self-locking bolt, front rear axle carrier rubber bushing at frame floor
Self-locking bolt, rear axle carrier rear rubber mount to frame floor
Bolt reinforcement strut rear axle carrier on floor panel
14 | Lower rear axle (2) | Check rear axle (2) for signs of damage, and replace any damaged parts.
15 | Install in the reverse order
16 | Check oil level in rear axle center assembly (50) and correct if necessary
| |||
| |||
Omnifit sealing compound
Loctite cleaning spray
17 | Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS | Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select the menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Initial startup after repair"/"Replace brake disks". Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
18 | Perform a wheel alignment check
19 | Measure kink and flection angle of propeller shaft, adjust if necessary |
