Modification notes
20.3.04 | Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified | Phased in as of 19.01.04 The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed. The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound.
The oil filler screw should always be replaced after being unscrewed from the rear axle differential. The new oil filler screw as well as the tapped hole must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and the oil filler screw provided with a special sealing compound | Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature.
20.3.04 | The vehicle must have a chassis alignment check after the rear axle is installed | Step 22 |
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
| While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected | ||
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Remove rear wheels | ||
| Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary | ||
2 | Remove exhaust system at flange connection
3 | Unhook brake cables (1) from automatic slack adjuster (2) of parking brake | See:
Remove rear brake cable
4 | Remove bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (3)
5 | Remove rear propeller shaft assembly (4) from rear axle differential. | Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.
Installation: Attach the rear propeller shaft to the rear axle differential.
| |||
6 | Slacken flexible coupling fitted sleeves on flange. | Put propeller shaft to one side and tie up.
| Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks. | ||
7 | Disconnect right rear brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/4x1)
8 | Detach cover for fuel pump assembly (5)
9 | Disconnect rpm sensor connector on the left (L6/3x1) and right (L6/4x1)
10 | Detach spring control arm cover (6) | To do this, pull pin out of expansion rivet and remove expansion rivet from spring control arm and spring control arm cover (6).
11 | Detach suspension strut (7) from spring control arm
12 | Detach level sensor control rod (8) from both spring control arms
Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
13 | Detach brake lines from brake hose (9) and seal openings | When loosening or tightening the brake line on the brake hose (9), take care not to twist the bracket. Counterhold open wrench on two flats of brake hose (9) using an open-end wrench.
Seal line connections immediately with plugs. The brake fluid reservoir must not run completely empty.
Box wrench bit | |||
Set of plugs | |||
Installation: The brake hoses (9) must not be twisted after being tightened (risk of cracking).

14 | Installing guard plate | Guard plate
15 | Use assembly attachment, pit hoist or floor jack beneath rear axle center assembly to support rear axle (10). | Assembly attachment
16 | Remove front rear axle suspension bolts (11c) and rear rear axle suspension bolts (11d) | Installation: Recut thread on frame floor with tap.
Installation: Tighten bolts as per tightening angle.
Rear axle suspension bolt, front (11c)
Rear axle suspension bolt, rear (11d)
17 | Carefully lower the rear axle (10). | In the process do not trap any brake cables (1) and lines.
18 | Check rear axle (10) for damage and if necessary replace parts.
19 | Install in the reverse order
20 | Check oil level in rear axle differential and correct if necessary | Mixing of old universal hypoid gear oil and the new FE hypoid gear oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy.
