Topical note | Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
| Remove/install | ||
| Operate parking brake.
| Disconnect compressed-air lines from combination brake cylinder and seal connections using suitable stop plugs. | Record plug
| Strap compressed-air lines of combination brake cylinder onto frame.
| Expose subharness (7) on right trailing arm (3). | Installation: Replace cable ties.
| Disconnect electrical connectors (11) from brakepad wear display.
| Mark electrical connectors (10) relative to one another.
| Disconnect electrical connectors (10) from ABS lines. | Installation: Note attached markings.
| Disconnect electrical connector (8) from differential lock.
| Remove compressed-air line (9) of differential lock from 3/2-way valve.
| Expose bleed line of rear axle.
| Unhook linkage for ALB controller (2) on rear axle and strap to frame. | Only on model 405.1/2 up to vehicle identification end number 253218, model 405.090
| Remove propeller shaft from flange on rear axle and strap to top of frame. | Bolt, propeller shaft to rear axle output shaft flange
| Remove left and right trailing arm (3) from rear axle. | Installation: If necessary, tilt rear axle using a jack.
Bolt for trailing arm at rear axle
| Remove left and right shock absorber (4) from rear axle. | Nut/bolt, shock absorber to rear axle
| Fix spring in installation position using a tensioning strap. | Fixing the springs in this position makes installation of the rear axle easier.
| Raise vehicle slightly at the trailer coupling using a crane.
| Secure rear axle using jack stands against tilting.
| Remove left and right stabilizer link (5) from rear axle. | Shims are located on the left and right stabilizer link (5).
Bolt, stabilizer link to rear axle
| Remove pilot bushing for left and right stabilizer link (5) on rear axle. | Installation: Check left and right pilot bushing for wear, and replace, if necessary.
| Remove transverse control arm (6). | Bolt, transverse control arm to frame
Bolt, transverse control arm to rear axle
| Raise vehicle at rear using a crane and carefully roll forwards. | Installation: Lower vehicle only far enough until the springs rest on the spring retainers.
| Set vehicle down on jack stands. | Use a protective strip between the frame and stands.
| Install in the reverse order
| Check, adjust automatic load-dependent brake (ALB). | Only on model 405.1/2 up to vehicle identification end number 253218, model 405.090
| Check compressed air lines for leak tightness. | Leak location spray LUBRION article no. 626.04
