Modification notes
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | All models | |
1 | Release parking brake | Secure the vehicle against rolling.
2 | Separate clevis (1) of spring-loaded cylinder (2) from parking brake lever (3) | To do this, pull out cotter pin (4) and remove bolt (5).
Installation: Install bolt (5) free of tension. Replace cotter pin (4) and coat with long-life grease. Caution when releasing the parking brake again due to the clevis (1) shooting out.
3 | Operate parking brake | For bleeding the compressed air line (8).
4 | Disconnect connectors of wheel speed sensors (6)
5 | Disconnect connector of brake wear indicator (7)
6 | Remove compressed air lines (8, 9)
7 | Detach brake lines (10) from brake hoses (11) on frame | Seal brake lines (10) and brake hoses (11).
8 | Pull out locking plate (12) of brake hoses (11) and remove brake hoses (11) from the bracket
9 | Remove cable tie (13) and take vent lines (14) out of the wiring loom | Installation: Replace cable ties (13).
10 | Remove bolt (15) from shock absorber (16)
11 | Remove bolt (17) from bracket of stabilizer link (18)
12 | Remove bolt (19) from transverse control arm (20) on the axle side
13 | Separate linkage of automatic load-dependent brake (ALB) (21) on the axle side | Pull out locking needle and pry off ball head.
14 | Place jack stand under torque tube (22)
15 | Remove bolts (23) of torque tube (22) from rear axle output shaft | Installation: Clean sealing surfaces and use sealing compound.
| |||
16 | Using chain hoist, pull rear axle away from transfer case | In order to gain access to the bolts of propeller shaft (25).
17 | Remove bolts (24) of propeller shaft (25)
Installation: Before attaching the propeller shaft (25) to the output flange, the torque ball of the torque tube (22) must be adjusted:
Adjust preload of torque tube to torque ball housing
| |||
18 | Using a crane system raise the vehicle slightly at the trailer hitch and roll out the rear axle backwards | with a second fitter and a suitable rod.
Installation: Only lower the vehicle until the springs abut the spring cups.
19 | Put down vehicle on support stands under frame
20 | Install in the reverse order
21 | Check/adjust automatic load-dependent brake (ALB)
22 | Check compressed air lines (8, 9) for leaks
23 | Check function of differential lock
24 | Check oil level and correct if necessary
| Rear axle - check fluid level, adjust to correct level | ||
